City girl or country girl?  I’m sure you’ve heard this question before, but this past weekend, I realized that there is a third part to this question.  City girl, country girl or suburb girl?  I am definitely a suburb girl!

I just got back from Philadelphia.  There was a user group meeting for the software we use to keep track of all your orders and I brought one of my employees Nicole (the one who keeps our website running and looking so great!).

Now first, let me say that although Philly is known as the "City of Brotherly Love", I didn’t notice any love going on there.  Lots of horn beeping, yelling out car windows, cussing and finger-waving, but not a lot of love.  (Of course, I’m sure none of them were scrapbookers!) :-)

Neither of us had ever been to Philly before, so we took an early flight so we’d have a few hours to see the sites.  We had a Philly cheesesteak taste-off between rival restaurants Geno’s and Pat’s (I liked Pat’s – Nicole liked Geno’s) and I can now say with personal experience that it is my opinion that Cheese Whiz does not belong on a sandwich.

We visited the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Chinatown.  We saw the house where Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag and took the bridge to New Jersey.  It was just across the river and neither one of us had either been there either.

Driving inside the city nearly gave me a heart attack.  Narrow roads…people walking everywhere…cab drivers honking and cutting people off…people on bicycles coming out of nowhere.  It was driving overload!

Saturday night, a friend of mine from the conference, Steve from www.AmericanMuscle.com invited us out to Malvern (45 minutes NW of Philly) to visit his warehouse.  I always like to see how other people do things so I can figure out how to do what we do better.

As we were driving out there, I started noticing things around me.  A grocery store…a chain restaurant…a strip mall!  Finally, I felt like I was home!  At that moment, I knew it…I am a suburb girl.  Give me a Walgreen’s every mile, a TGI Friday’s and a strip mall with the same stores no matter where in the country you are and I feel a sense of peace. :-)

However, this has been my third trip in three weeks and it finally caught up with me.  I spent all day Monday home in bed (but the strep throat culture came back negative).  I never thought I’d say this, but I’m tired of traveling for awhile.  No more business trips until June, so I can unpack my suitcase now. :-)

Wherever you’ve been traveling, we have the scrapbook supplies for you to make your pages shine!  We have a new travel collection from American Crafts and two new collections from BasicGrey are here!  Lime Rickey and Wisteria (don’t you just love the name Lime Rickey?).  We also have three collections from Carolee’s Creations:  Easter, Aunt Mame (cooking) and Dance, along with two collections from Reminisce: Graduation and Good Dog.  A second round of Painted Pages from Jennan, Fairytale Princesses from Creative Imaginations and stickers from EK Success are also available in our new items this week.  Layouts for the graduation and travel  collections are in the Shop By Layout section.

Hey Guys…..so you didn’t like Philly huh? I live about 50 miles north of there in NJ and have to say, I love Philly. Of course we’re used to driving in NYC so Philly is the same thing. I consider myself a country girl and the first time there, it was frightening, but…after a few times it seems normal. You headed out into the “country” part of PA….a lot prettier than the inner city.
Thanks again for all your WONDERFUL products…I love them.

I live in a suburb of Philly, and I love to visit the city. Didn’t you enjoy the historical sites? Driving in Philly is just something you get used to…and all the horns, finger waving, and yelling, is just their way of saying “Welcome to the City of Brotherly Love.” Give it another chance sometime!!

I love the 12 x 12 antique map of the US (SYT-P1872), showing the Eastern half of the country. It would be cool to have a paper with the Western half also. this would allow for a really cool, 2 page layout of a cross country trip. Or, if you have a far-flung family, mount pictures of them in the state in which they live. There are lots of fun things you could do with these papers. Love your site, just got my latest order and it was complete and fast!

Didn’t like Philly? I live about an hour out of Philadelphia and I take everyone who comes to visit us on tour. There is plenty to do and see and yes, there is noise but what big city doesn’t have noise. Ever been to NY City?? I rest my case.
Just so you know, I’m a country girl, but you can still enjoy the big city once in awhile.
About the cheesesteaks, you have to love Pat’s!!

We’ve been to Philly 3 or 4 times in the past few years. Every time we go, I hate to leave. If we could move there we do it in a heartbeat! The first time we went, we visited all the places you visited except Chinatown. By the way, we also did the taste-off and liked Geno’s better. I know what you mean about the narrow streets——wow!! Thankfully, my husband did all the driving.

I have been to Philly but only a long time ago. What struck me in your commentary though was the realization that you are a suburb girl and would feel at home in one anywhere. Because I am definitely a city girl and it doesn’t matter where in the world I have been, if I’m in a city I feel at home! Give me a subway, some buses and city sidewalks and I’m a happy girl! I grew up in Montreal and, while I live in a smaller city now (no subways!) I couldn’t live in a place I had to drive everywhere.

HI, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy getting these messages!

    Thanks!

We moved from a suburb of Philly 35 years ago, and the ONLY thing I miss are the cheesesteak sandwiches (without CheeseWhiz!!). Give me country life anyday. Iowa is fantastic!

Is there a possibilty to get a diecut for Special Olympics? My grandson just won a blue and a red ribbon, and will go to State next month. Last year he won two medals, and i would love to scrap a page about his accomlishments.

    Thanks for thinking about it.

    Hi,
I went to Philly a year ago to see the King Tut exhibit. We stayed in the city but walked wherever we could. The traffic didn’t bother us – probably because we live in the MD/DC area (some of the worst traffic anywhere) People we met were all quite nice. We even got friendly with the owner of a little Ital. restaurant and got a free glass of wine. I guess most big cities are scary to drive in – I prefer the suburbs, too, if I have to drive. I look at big cities as nice places to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Hey! I just read your latest newsletter and see that you aren’t a fan of Philly. Well I guess its an acquired thing. I was born and raised in Philly. Lived there for 25yrs until I moved to South Jersey, (really south, like Cape May) married and that is where I’ve been for the past 17yrs! I do know what you mean about the city though. Going back now to see family/friends I remark to my husband all the time (he grew up in the suburbs) that I wouldn’t want to raise our family here! It has changed from when I grew up but I think its still a great place!!

Hey Julie, thanks for your comments on the 3 types of girl & your adventures in Philly. My first time in Philly was a little shocking to me as well. But then so was New York City! I live in L.A. & thought Philly would be a little slower pace, but not!! I’ve had the privilege of being able to work and travel all around the United States and I can honestly say no two big cities are alike. Each one is unique. Philly’s rich history makes it worth coming back to. I’ve always found great people every where I’ve gone so I can say I still love travel, but I know what you mean about being home once in awhile. It’s nice to rest & of course scrapbook! P.S. I’m really a country girl stuck living in the big city.

Why is it that females are always left out of summer sports such as SOFTBALL when it comes to buying scrapbooking items? There are always baseball this and that but not anything new for softball. Please help!!!

Regarding your visit to NJ, I hope you enjoyed your stay “with us”. If you visit again, check out the Jersey Shore, especially the Wildwoods. It has the longest boardwalk of any Jersey Shore boardwalk. Not too far from Wildwood is beautiful Cape May. Do try to climb to the top of the Lighthouse it offers amazing views. In North Wildwood there is also the lovely Hereford Lighthouse. Both are great. Bring your family next time.
You may get some great scrapbook items from the visit-hint Lighthouse & Wildwood Beach paper.
