I remember having “the talk” – with my sons long before having it with my daughter… I remember them broaching the subject while I was driving on a very narrow, winding, country road in rural western Maryland… I almost wrecked the car with the questions they asked!!! (for some reason we always had frank, open and honest question and answer time in the car just the 3 of us) – That conversation is well remembered by all of us and has provided a great many chuckles now that they are in their 30′s…
Enjoy the bonding time with your daughter… you both with survive!! Be sincere and honest!! (can’t imagine any other way)

My youngest is almost 23 now but started having the talks from about age 10 and kept talking for the next 10 years as she needed to know more and needed to be reminded. Keeping the lines of communication open is the secret. And also sharing things that may have happened to you also. Then they know you are only human too. Good Luck

Remember when you are talking to your daughter, ask her first what she knows. If she is confident that you are sincere and not nervous, she won’t be either! Continue to ask for her comments and input as you communicate with her. That way it will be a discussion, not a lecture. (What have you heard about _____? What seems confusing? What would you like me to explain?). Plan that you might have to take several breaks throughout your weekend and when you start up again, ask her if she has thought of any new questions for you about what you have already talked about. I will echo that the American Girl book is wonderful both for reading before and after the two of you spend your time together. It’s a great method for discussing what’s up with her body and her changes as well as sexual relations. Good for you for doing this. Remember, it’s not just a one time talk lol! I have two adult kids now, and I was amazed a few years back when my son actually wanted my input (once again) about birth control when he began dating in his late teen years. You can, and will, do a good job! Enjoy your weekend and bringing your daughter into the next phase of her wonderful live

I think it is great also that you are going away for the weekend with Lauren. My mom did nothing not even a book. My daughter is 8 and I have started to think about what I am going to do and say. Dr Dobson (from focus on the family) says to take your daughter away. But he also has great books and ideas. Check it out http://www.focusonthefamily.com

Hopefully your husband will have ‘the talk’ with your son. We had two boys, and I had to give ‘the talk’ to both of them. It wasn’t as bad as I had imagined it…but really, I think it should have been Dad talking to the sons…he knows what’s going on in the male perspective!

Ugh…I have to do that too…before school starts in Sept and they do it…I’m dreading it! But I did by the American Girl book “The Body Book for Girls” – it has cartoon like pics and written like a girl wrote it…I like the idea of going away! I just don’t know how to start it off. And then to have her keep it from her 6 year old sister!

Great Idea! I bought my daughter a book, can’t remember the name of it, but it also dealt with adoption, too, and since she was adopted, I thought that would be a good book.

I was a chicken. I gave her the book, had her read it and if she had any questions, I told her to come and see me. She was a very intelligent kid, and I thought she could handle it.

When she finished, she came downstairs, and I asked her how it went, and her reply:

” I think it’s gross”

Oh well, LOL

I think it is a great idea……..Parents should think more like you and not let their kids hear “the birds and the bees” talk from other kids.

What a great idea! I’m 55, but i remember when my mom had “the talk” with me. We went to New York City for the weekend and stayed at a lovely hotel, had dinner and got to see a broadway show! We talked, laughed and cried…but she got her point across and we became not only mother and daughter…but great friends. Enjoy your weekend

Bought a great book for “the talk”, called “It’s Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health”. Real birds and bees cartoons to lighten the topic. Our son read it at his leisure and then, we talked. It was a great way to open up discussions and take the pressure off of us.

Now, if he has questions, he’ll read the book and then, come to us to talk about it.

Looking back, I would not go any other way!
