I guess it’s because it was just my birthday, but I’ve really been thinking about my age lately. I know I don’t look my age…don’t act my age…and I certainly don’t feel my age! But, I am getting older and wiser and that’s just a fact. But I NEVER want to look my age, act my age or feel my age and that means I have to take some action.
Right before I went to Boston, I went for the follow-up appointment with the lung specialist. Not allergic to the cat – big surprise there! However, something else happened there that had an effect on me.
As I was checking out, there was a very nicely dressed elderly woman with two forearm crutches – you know – the kind with the cuff thing that goes around your arm. Anyway, she was complaining to the receptionist about the parking. She couldn’t find a parking spot and had to park and walk all the way around the building to get to the handicapped ramp because she couldn’t step up the curb. On my way to my car, I passed her on the sidewalk and said that "I overheard you inside saying you were having trouble with the sidewalk. Do you need some help?" She said, "No, I’m fine. I just have trouble walking and cannot walk up or down the curbs." She made a little more small talk and as I turned to walk away, she looked at me with a depth of sadness I have rarely seen and said "Don’t get old."
Then this past Saturday, we all went on a pontoon boat ride on Lake Dora, in Mt. Dora. There were three others that were going on the trip with us. I sat with my son Logan and watched two women in their 50’s struggle…and I mean struggle…to step down into the boat from the dock. Not even up, but down!
Well, that was it for me. On Monday, I joined the Y and hired a personal trainer. Yesterday I was up at 4:38 am to head to the gym and I lifted a total of 4,820 pounds. Up at 5:00 am again this morning for 2 miles on the treadmill.
I remember an old Oil of Olay commercial from when I was younger that said "Age old gracefully? Fight it every step of the way!" I didn’t understand it then. I thought you should just be accepting.
But at 42? Heck with that!
I’m going to bust my butt in the gym and I plan on doing a little number reversal and having the body of a 24-year old instead of a 42-year old when I’m done!
I’ll keep you posted with stats along my journey…anyone want to join me?

Hey Julie,
Congrats on fighting old age! I have an idea for you… have you ever done a triathlon? I’m not talking an Ironman distance but a sprint triathlon or try-a-tri. They are a wonderful way to get variety in your training and a goal. And bonus for you… Florida has the most triathletes training in all of the US. I know that and I live in Canada. My older sister (also 42) and I (38 this year) started doing them about 3 years ago. I am still overweight but I compete in a category based on my age and “over 150 lbs”. Looking forward to hearing about your changes. Keep up the great work; personally and professionally. You brighten my day!

Julie I’m fighting it right along with you!! I’ve lost 50 lbs and need another 50 to go but along my “journey” I realized I’m not just fighting the battle of the bulge, I’m fighting my age too (which is 46). I want people to say “you look great” not “you look good for your age”. But more importantly it’s all about keeping an active life (or getting a higher quality of life) and being around the longest possible time to see your grandkids & great grandkids etc. . .

Julie,
You are so like me! I’m also 42 and totally in denial about it. Every week I read your emails and I can’t believe how much alike we are. Good luck on your fitness trek – I will be joining you soon. I lost my mother recently (she was only 65!) so I understand this aging thing completely. I don’t look or act my age either – but I want it to stay that way! Keep up the good work.

Julie,
Congrats on beginning a lifestyle change! I too recently started getting up at 4:30 am to go to the gym before work, and I love it. I have never felt better. Combine this with “clean eating” and you will look like you are 24 before you know it!

I have a suggestion, please. How about 2 page layouts in the layout section??? I love to get idea’s and your girls are very talented but I would like to see 2 page layouts instead of one. Just a thought.

Julie,
First of all, Happy Birthday! You are such a motivator that I will join you too. I have packed on over 40 lbs. since I started school again. Thanks for helping me put things in perspective, sometimes I take my health for granted. My goal is six months and promise to send you before and after pictures of my progress. Thanks!
Vicky

Have you seen anything on birds? A friend and I did some birdwatching in Florida and I am having trouble finding emblishments to go on my pages. Suggestions are egrets, herons, sandpipers, cormorants, ibises, cranes……
Thanks,
Phyllis

Julie ~ Your love for life is so contagious! I have been experiencing many of the same feelings about age recently, too. I will be 40 in November, and I am finding myself trying to stretch out each season of this year even longer. I finally realized it was because I don’t want 40 to hit quite yet! It’s not the age that bothers me, but my body has recently started to look and act as though its aging. And here I thought I was immune to this aging thing; HA! So you have motivated me to join you as well! I’m not sure about the 4:30 AM part, but I’ll see what I can do! Thanks for the inspirations not just for scrapbooking but for living! You’re amazing! God bless… Jan

Julie, congratulations and good luck with getting back to the “new You”. Try not to burn out with the early AM workouts. Pace yourself on what activity you do each day. Do take a day off and reward yourself as you see acomplishments. If you have a pool at your club, Aqua aerobics is not only fun but very rewarding no matter what age or figure type you may be.
Join in with the kids with a huala-hoop and jumping rope. Plus bike rides are a great family exercise.
Good luck. Do report in as group support helps a lot in a weight reduction plan. It doesn’t have to cost lots of money, also.

Wow! Talk about timing. I have been trying to start a makeover on myself ~ in two weeks I’ll be 45 ~ but look and feel much older. My daughter and I recently joined Curves and as we were heading out this morning I stopped and read your blog. I thought it was more incentive and just then I get a phone call saying my 48 year old brother has had a stroke! After a talk with him (whew) we still went to the gym. My health crazed son has been on me about my weight and health and I know he is right…..so I am with you on your journey. Look out world~I don’t expect miracles~just a healthier and more confident ME! Good luck to you Julie and thanks for the added push.

I am 53 and do not think of myself as that age. I may not exercise or eat as I should, but I don’t plan to age anyway but gracefully. I have been thru chemo & radiation due to Breast Cancer since November 08. I feel better now than I have in months. Don’t let the people you see get to you. My 78 year old Mother is still working full time and is great shape.

Yes, I want to join you. I just recently bought a book about styaing motivated on a diet and then being able to change you thought process along the way. I have been heavy all my adult life (some kids rebelled against their parents using drugs, I was too smart for that, but Twinkies were my downfall!). I want to be healthier. I have lost and kept off 50 lbs for over 8 years now, but I need to lose a lot more, get in better shape, etc. On the ohter hand, I think old age is an attitude. And I refuse to be defined by age. I was born a few hours too late to be born on my grandma’s birthday and I like to say I have been a tad late every since! I was happy as a teenager, rebelled in my 20’s (the Twinkie episode), quit school for a while and then went back and graduated in my 30’s , didn’t move out until my 30’s and didn’t find the man of my dreams until my early 40’s. But I have still had it all, just later than the norm! My parents are still working (by choice) in their late 70;s and I want to be also. I substitue teach and love it! After 30 years of working in corporate America, now I get to “play” with children!
But I am off track. I am currently reading and beginning The Beck Diet Solution. I joined Curves a while back, but stopped going, I am heading back there today! Thanks for the motivation! Maybe you should start a blog where anyone who is doing something for themselves (going back to school, losing weight, getting in shape, stop smoking, etc) could post and we could all help each other become better!
One of my favorite sayings–no idea who said it–I don’t want to become an old lady, I want to become an old woman who is doing and caring and exploring until she fades away from pure joy!
I am planning on “fading away” in my 100’s! Please join me on my joirney–its okay to be late!

It must be an age thing, because I decided this was the year to take care of ME. I turned 41 in December and thought man, I sure don’t like the way I look in the mirror! I’ve been tested for allergies and have started taking weekly shots for them, joined the gym & got a personal trainer. I decided I wanted to look healthy & good for my 25th class reunion next year and then May of 2011 is my 20th wedding anniversary. It is hard work to go the gym and push myself to do what the trainer wants, but I don’t want to be 50 and barely able to walk up stairs, or bend over to tie my shoes. My “muffin top” is going away even with days of pain from workouts but I will do it because it’s for ME not my kids or my husband. Keep us informed on your progress Julie and good luck!!

Hi Julie,
I am with ya. I started working on it just before 40. And have re-surged an interest in really getting in right for the long term. Picked up a book on a Raw Diet on Sunday. I was a little skeptical at first, but now I am kind of excited about it. The funny part is that at the moment I am having a hard time eating enough food. That’s never been a problem before. (And I get to eat HEALTHY CHOCOLATE 70% and yah there is a chocolate store in Jacksonville that sells it. )
Can’t wait to hear more about your journey.

Congrats on your workouts and wanting to get healthier! It’s taken me a little longer to figure that out for myself, but have been doing Weight Watchers and have lost 42 pounds, have another 40 to lose. I had been going to Curves because that’s about all I could do at the time, but have now joined a gym and taking hour classes Mon-Thurs of step aerobics and body sculpting with weights and absolutely love it. I have more energy now, which is the most important thing to me! I actually changed my work hours to 7:30 to 4:00 so I can take the 4:30 classes at the gym and have to get up earlier in the morning, but it is all worth it to feel better. Keep up the good work everyone!!
16. Karen | June 24th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
The gym is great! I’m in better shape now at the age of 46 than I was in my 30’s. One of my friends stated something that I think is the greatest quote of all time (perhaps because I don’t just say it, I live it!) “Some people fight aging with plastic surgery. I prefer to fight it with immaturity!”
So have fun, laugh at yourself and do some crazy things. We may get wrinkles and gray hair, but we’ll have one heck of a time!

Hi, Wondering if you see any Gnome flavored paper, could you stock a few ? I’ve recently been to Floriade in Canberra, where wehad the most fun “Painting a Gnome” for the Rotary club contest. Then traveling around Australia with some friends, we each bought a little Gnome figurine to add flavor to our travel pics, they turned out great! Oddly enough, my next trip took my friend and I through Gnomesville, Western Australia…so someone is obviously positioning me near Gnome lovers…I’d like to make some accompanying layouts!
Thanks
Kris

“don’t get old.” Thats’s what my grandmother always says to me. “Stay young and beautiful.” Good advice from the woman who just had a big 95th birthday bash last weekend! I overheard her tell one of the guests that she doesn’t feel 95, she doesn’t think she feels any different than she did 25-30 years ago. My grandmother’s family were farmers, and they all worked hard and were active all their lives. She still lives alone and bakes pies like crazy for Thanksgiving and Christmas. When she was in her 80s, my grandmother somehow locked herself out of her house. Instead of going to the neighbor’s to get a key, or calling my mom, she climbed up on something, jimmied open the bathroom window and climbed through the window into the house!
Grandmother promised she gave me those good genes! 2 years ago, I decided at 45 to not let those genes down. I joined Curves and lost 30 pounds.
I was proud to look and feel great at my grandmother’s party. She’s already starting to plan for the 100th. She readily admits that she’s “a tough old broad,” I hope I can keep up with her!

Uh oh, watch out Julie! That lady was remiss telling you not to get old coz the alternative is alot worse! Your exercise regime sounds a bit unsustainable to me. I can’t help feeling you’d do better to incorporate a bit more exercise into your daily life with fun trips to the gym/pool for the family or you and a friend. Be careful you don’t become one of those awful people who only talk about the latest weight loss/inch loss/gym move etc. All things in moderation as they say! I’m sure you won’t you’re way too sensible but it sounded like a bit of a panic attack to me!
20. Diana | June 25th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Hi Julie,
I’m 42 also. I’ve worked out off and on since my 30’s but conistently the last 3-4 yrs. I went from never running-hating it in fact- to doing a 5k and will be training for a 10k (then hopefully keep working my way up to a marathon). But I was in great shape to have a baby at this age!! She is two months old and because of my consistent work outs, I don’t even look like I’ve had a baby(or so I’m told)! So good luck in your work outs- you CAN do it and most importantly, stick with it!
Diana

I was so pleased to hear you last week saying you thought you had reached the age where you no longer cared what people thought… then this week you’re hoping to get the body of a 24 year old! I am 56 and take reasonable care of myself but mainly I try to enjoy each and every day. My friends who spent the last 20 years exercising obsessively and angsting over everything they ate don’t look any better or worse than I do today– genetics is far more important than anything I think!
Remember, “Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming … WOW! What a ride!”
22. sandy | June 26th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Julie,
Congratulations on the making of the new you! I started in January–47 years old. Had already lost 50lbs in the past 2 years, but the fitness…began walking on the treadmill-very slowly at first-gradually picking up to a run walk. By March I had signed up to do a 1/2 Marathon May2. I had never run more than 6 miles at one time! My goal was to finish-who cares about the time-I just wanted my medal for finishing. Ended up running the whole thing in 2-1/2 hours. I’ve kept it up, and have lost an additional 24lbs, added strength training, and am running the 1/2 marathon in Vegas in December.
Keep up the good work, and remember that slow and steady wins the race!
