Julie,
Congratulations on the making of the new you! I started in January--47 years old. Had already lost 50lbs in the past 2 years, but the fitness...began walking on the treadmill-very slowly at first-gradually picking up to a run walk. By March I had signed up to do a 1/2 Marathon May2. I had never run more than 6 miles at one time! My goal was to finish-who cares about the time-I just wanted my medal for finishing. Ended up running the whole thing in 2-1/2 hours. I've kept it up, and have lost an additional 24lbs, added strength training, and am running the 1/2 marathon in Vegas in December.
Keep up the good work, and remember that slow and steady wins the race!

I was so pleased to hear you last week saying you thought you had reached the age where you no longer cared what people thought... then this week you're hoping to get the body of a 24 year old! I am 56 and take reasonable care of myself but mainly I try to enjoy each and every day. My friends who spent the last 20 years exercising obsessively and angsting over everything they ate don't look any better or worse than I do today-- genetics is far more important than anything I think!
Remember, “Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”

Hi Julie,
I'm 42 also. I've worked out off and on since my 30's but conistently the last 3-4 yrs. I went from never running-hating it in fact- to doing a 5k and will be training for a 10k (then hopefully keep working my way up to a marathon). But I was in great shape to have a baby at this age!! She is two months old and because of my consistent work outs, I don't even look like I've had a baby(or so I'm told)! So good luck in your work outs- you CAN do it and most importantly, stick with it!

Uh oh, watch out Julie! That lady was remiss telling you not to get old coz the alternative is alot worse! Your exercise regime sounds a bit unsustainable to me. I can't help feeling you'd do better to incorporate a bit more exercise into your daily life with fun trips to the gym/pool for the family or you and a friend. Be careful you don't become one of those awful people who only talk about the latest weight loss/inch loss/gym move etc. All things in moderation as they say! I'm sure you won't you're way too sensible but it sounded like a bit of a panic attack to me!

"don't get old." Thats's what my grandmother always says to me. "Stay young and beautiful." Good advice from the woman who just had a big 95th birthday bash last weekend! I overheard her tell one of the guests that she doesn't feel 95, she doesn't think she feels any different than she did 25-30 years ago. My grandmother's family were farmers, and they all worked hard and were active all their lives. She still lives alone and bakes pies like crazy for Thanksgiving and Christmas. When she was in her 80s, my grandmother somehow locked herself out of her house. Instead of going to the neighbor's to get a key, or calling my mom, she climbed up on something, jimmied open the bathroom window and climbed through the window into the house!
Grandmother promised she gave me those good genes! 2 years ago, I decided at 45 to not let those genes down. I joined Curves and lost 30 pounds.
I was proud to look and feel great at my grandmother's party. She's already starting to plan for the 100th. She readily admits that she's "a tough old broad," I hope I can keep up with her!

Hi, Wondering if you see any Gnome flavored paper, could you stock a few ? I've recently been to Floriade in Canberra, where wehad the most fun "Painting a Gnome" for the Rotary club contest. Then traveling around Australia with some friends, we each bought a little Gnome figurine to add flavor to our travel pics, they turned out great! Oddly enough, my next trip took my friend and I through Gnomesville, Western Australia...so someone is obviously positioning me near Gnome lovers...I'd like to make some accompanying layouts!
Thanks

The gym is great! I'm in better shape now at the age of 46 than I was in my 30's. One of my friends stated something that I think is the greatest quote of all time (perhaps because I don't just say it, I live it!) "Some people fight aging with plastic surgery. I prefer to fight it with immaturity!"

So have fun, laugh at yourself and do some crazy things. We may get wrinkles and gray hair, but we'll have one heck of a time!

Congrats on your workouts and wanting to get healthier! It's taken me a little longer to figure that out for myself, but have been doing Weight Watchers and have lost 42 pounds, have another 40 to lose. I had been going to Curves because that's about all I could do at the time, but have now joined a gym and taking hour classes Mon-Thurs of step aerobics and body sculpting with weights and absolutely love it. I have more energy now, which is the most important thing to me! I actually changed my work hours to 7:30 to 4:00 so I can take the 4:30 classes at the gym and have to get up earlier in the morning, but it is all worth it to feel better. Keep up the good work everyone!!

Hi Julie,

I am with ya. I started working on it just before 40. And have re-surged an interest in really getting in right for the long term. Picked up a book on a Raw Diet on Sunday. I was a little skeptical at first, but now I am kind of excited about it. The funny part is that at the moment I am having a hard time eating enough food. That's never been a problem before. (And I get to eat HEALTHY CHOCOLATE 70% and yah there is a chocolate store in Jacksonville that sells it. )

Can't wait to hear more about your journey.

It must be an age thing, because I decided this was the year to take care of ME. I turned 41 in December and thought man, I sure don't like the way I look in the mirror! I've been tested for allergies and have started taking weekly shots for them, joined the gym & got a personal trainer. I decided I wanted to look healthy & good for my 25th class reunion next year and then May of 2011 is my 20th wedding anniversary. It is hard work to go the gym and push myself to do what the trainer wants, but I don't want to be 50 and barely able to walk up stairs, or bend over to tie my shoes. My "muffin top" is going away even with days of pain from workouts but I will do it because it's for ME not my kids or my husband. Keep us informed on your progress Julie and good luck!!
