Do you believe one person can change the world?  I do.

I believe that Copernicus changed the world when he insisted that the Sun was at the center of the universe. I believe Rosa Parks changed the world when she refused to give up her seat on the bus.  I believe Bill Gates changed the world when he envisioned a computer on every desktop.

To change the world doesn’t have to be on such a big scale…it can be one person at a time.  I’d like to share with you two people who inspire me and who I believe are a fantastic example of how one person…one idea…can make a huge impact.

The first is a man by the name of Bert Brady.  The video of him being named Person of the Week by ABC News is several years old, but still just as inspiring.  He is retired veteran who established the “Welcome Home a Hero” program at the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport.  He, and a whole group of his new friends, welcome every soldier coming home.  Please take a minute to watch the video – I think you’ll be glad you did.  Click here to see:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/beb.html

Another person that inspires me is Carolyn Blashek, founder of Operation Gratitude.  She wanted to enlist in the military after 9/11, but they told her she was too old.  She then started to volunteer at her local USO.  One day when she was volunteering, a man came to speak to the chaplain, who was unavailable.  He was on his way to get on a plane, back to duty.  He told Carolyn “I don’t think I’ll make it back, but it really doesn’t matter, because no one would care anyway.”  At that moment, she realized how important it was for the soldiers in harm’s way to believe that the people at home care about them.

So, she founded Operation Gratitude, which to date, has mailed out 451,285 care packages to troops overseas.  In the beginning, she got the name of a General and sent him an e-mail asking for the names and addresses of all the soldiers under his command so that Operation Gratitude could send them a care package from home.

He wrote back”  “Ma’am, I don’t think you know who I am or how many soldiers I have under my command.  I currently have a force of 39,000 soldiers.”

She wrote back, “General, I don’t think you know who I am.  Just send me the names and addresses and I will make sure every one of them receives a care package from us at home.”  She did.

Scrap Your Trip has been a supporter of Operation Gratitude for the last few years. ( http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/operationgratitude.html)

Not on the Target or AT&T level, but last year we donated care packages for over 80 soldiers, so I know we made a difference to those 80, and that’s what matters to me.

We’re not doing a special promotion this week…I am going to donate $1.50 per order (up from $1.00 last year) of every order placed between today and July 4th to Operation Gratitude instead, so that together we can make a difference in the life of one soldier.  One who is sacrificing his/her time, money, family and possibly even life to ensure that I can enjoy and revel in my freedoms this July 4th

So, please join me in supporting our troops.  You can even get some great scrapbook supplies as part of the deal! :-)

Thank you for posting the information regarding people who do good things. It’s very nice to read since most of what is on the news or in the newspapers is who killed who, who was mugged, or other upsetting and depressing news. It just reinforces the fact that not everyone in this world is evil. Thanks.

I absolutely love this idea! Both my husband and I are in the US Air Force and it is wonderful to know we are supported – even if just in idea.

My husband is currently in South Korea right now for a year tour and I would appriciate if he was included in your prayers for troups overseas. Many times, when we think of our “deployed troops” we only think of the ones in Iraq, Afghanistan and Qatar. We don’t think (or sometimes even realize) all the troops we have in South Korea (which is now becoming a dangerous place with NKorea acting up), Guam, Honduras and even the ones stationed in Germany or Italy or those “nice places” who are seperated from their families and not always doing a “nice mission.” That prayer and love that comes from home, is the thing that keeps our troops going and fighting as hard as they can.

    Thank you!

God bless you for your donation to this organization. It brought tears to my eyes. I lost a college friend in the war and will have another dear friend deployed within the next 6 months. Thank you for supporting our troops!

My husband retired from the Air Force and my son served with the Marines in Afghanistan and is now in the Army Reserve. Thank you for reminding everyone to remember the troops. What a wonderful cause!!
    God bless you.

I just wanted to say thank you for supporting this worthy cause. My husband is currently serving in Iraq for his second tour within a 2 1/2 year period. Every bit of support is greatly appreciated by those serving everywhere in the world, not just in combat areas. Please also remember to include the families in your prayers. In many cases, they have it a lot harder than the soldiers themselves. Prayers and God Bless.

My husband returned from a year in a Iraq on the 4th of July 2008. I found your company shortly after when I was searching for military supplies for his deployment album. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause. Every little bit of home these brave men and women get, makes the long hours and days a little brighter! You would not believe how excited they get to recieve mail of any kind let alone a care package of familiar items from home! Thanks again!

Julie: What a blessing to highlight one of America’s Persons of the Week. My husband is a Viet Nam Vet and believe me, those vets got no welcome home whatsoever. Three cheers to Mr. Brady and his group of volunteers.

    Julie:
As you can probably tell from my many orders of military products, I was spent a career in the Army. I have a daughter who is a pilot in Afghanistan and a son who is the Executive Officer of a submarine. They both LOVE it when they get a Mom-o-gram or a care package. But, there are many who don’t get any mail or any packages. Thank you for caring!

My son came home from Iraq Easter Sunday…the best gift a mother could have! He’s a Marine…and the job isn’t done…until all come home. He never got a care package other than what we sent to his troop. The Best gift his troop worship was a huge flag another wife/mom made for them. USO is a great organization. But a lot of young men and women come from rural area. As Service personnal it is our job…to not allow your local area to “Forget”. I remember as a kid, how Vietam Vets. where treated. These soliders are there…out of choice…not a draft.
My big marine..actual shed a tear…when a WW vet. thanked him.
We’ve an organization called..”Operation solider”…something that has helped our local guys and girls….plus, our Vet. Hospital as well.
Started by families of vets. We have boyscout troops as well, as local school students helping.
