Scrap Your Trip Adds 239 Items + 239 S*A*L*E Items

Entry Filed under: New Items Added

I am the kind of person who tries to learn a lesson in everything.  I figure that everything happens for a reason and it’s up to me to figure out what the reason is.  At the very least, there is something I can learn from whatever happens, right?

So, what lesson can I learn from the fire alarm going off in my building at midnight the other night?  Turns out there were plenty of them!

First, it amazed me at how many people in the building assumed it was a false alarm and didn’t evacuate.  Of the whole building, only 5 units evacuated.  Now, I wasn’t thrilled about being outside in the middle of the night, but since when do you not head outside when there is a fire alarm?  It must be deeply ingrained in me since elementary school.

But the biggest lesson came next.  After about ten minutes, and not hearing any sirens, I started asking people if anyone had called 911.  Nope.  Not one person (of course, I only had 5 to ask, remember).  Everyone “assumed” that they had been notified automatically, or that someone else had already called.

Well, I never “assume” anything, so I called 911.  Turns out I was the first to call.  Imagine that!  Within 5 minutes, the Osceola County Fire Department was on the scene (kudos to them!).  By that time, I had already found the number for the property management company and their emergency line (didn’t get me anywhere, but that’s a whole different story).

Since I was stuck outside with only my iPhone, I thought this was Facebook worthy. :-)   When I posted the second time “Well, at least there are cute firemen…with AXES!”, Melissa commented “Nice to find the bright side to a fire alarm.”

See, that was my next lesson.  There is a bright side to everything.  :-)   Of course, Judy wanted me to get pictures of the cute firemen, but they seemed a little busy!

In all seriousness, my big lesson was this:  Take Action.  Be the person who says “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”  Don’t assume, because I know you all know that saying!

Oh, and one more thing…if there is a fire alarm…EVACUATE THE BUILDING!

As we had a smoke alarm malfunction at home this weekend, it was tough to lug my toddler out in the cold every time the alarm went off (more than 10 times) but like you say, when the alarm goes off, get out! We did. Boy was I glad when my husband fixed the faulty detector. That was a lesson I’d rather teach my son in summer than winter!

Having lived in high-rise apartments all my adult life, I am pretty well versed in fire/evacuation issues. To make my life a bit easier if the building were, indeed, destroyed, I assembled a “Katrina” box. A water/fire proof box containing copies of licenses, titles, registrations, plus a list of every account (insurance, financial etc) that has my name on it. In that list are all the account names, numbers, phone numbers, email addresses etc etc. For the credit cards, I include the card number, expiration date, and 800 numbers. All my physicians names and phone numbers plus my prescription info. Then, there is a 3 day supply of all my meds, a toothbrush and paste, an extra set of keys, some cash, 3 bank checks, an extra ATM card, plus yarn and needles for a pair of socks. Have to have my toys, you know. I keep this box in the coat closet beside the exit door and just grab it if I need to evacuate. Fortunately, I have never been forced out of my home for any length of time, but If I were, I’d have all my info with me. Or if something should happen to me, my contact person would have everything they needed to know conveniently assembled. It takes just a few minutes each year to update everything and is well worth the peace of mind.

We have had fire alarms go off a couple different times in hotels, so my advice for the day is always wear pjs that you don’t mind people seeing you in just in case ;)
I’m glad you are ok Julie-love reading all your posts!!!

There was a fire down the street last year. After that, I bought one of those emergency ladders and I have it next to the window of our second floor bedroom. They come in sizes up to 4 stories. Look online for best selection and remember to check the maximum weight limit for those of you with overweight husbands !!

I can’t imagine having to be woken up by a fire alarm and nobody having called the fire department. Glad you took control. I have a brother in law who is a fireman and always try to tell him thank you for waking up in the middle of the night to help someone in need. I don’t live in the same town, but I thank our local fireman as well. I buy their meal if they are at the same restaurant as me when I am there. I always tell the wait staff to tell them a local citizen says thank you and your meal has been covered. I am thankful for them, their spouses and children. They give their time training and learning new and better ways to help save lives. Their spouses have to share them with us and I’m sure they see or hear the words about the cute firemen all the time. their kids are great too because they give up play time with dad/mom so they can save or help other people. If you’ve never had a need to call 911, be thankful. Thank your local fire dept in whatever way you can. I like to feed them cause they are always hungry growing men. And cute!

Julie, you know that action pictures are often the most fun to scrap :-) I was a firefighters wife for 20 years
and I thought one of the scariest things he had to do was go into a burning building to be sure everyone evacuated. So I agree, if there is an alarm – leave!

I read your lovely story. The notion that we can always find something to be grateful for is one of the foundations of my belief system.
I have so enjoyed doing business with you in the past. I am no longer well enough to sit and scrapbook. Maybe someday….
Thank you for your efforts and the way you share so freely.
    Blessings.
