The past few mornings have been really foggy here in Orlando. That “pea soup” kind of fog where you can barely see in front of you. The kids thought it was really cool that it looked like we were on the edge of the earth. As we were pulling into school, Lauren said, “Look at all the fog on the spider webs!” There is a sidewalk bridge on the road and underneath the railings, there had to be at least 50 separate spider webs located in all the corners of the railings. Each one of them was covered in dew drops, so that you could see all the silken strands of the web.
“Ahhh. One of the many beauties of life,” she said.
That comment stopped me dead in my tracks. Would I have noticed the spider webs if she hadn’t pointed them out? Probably not. I was in “you’ve got to get to school mode and I have this to do today and that to do today” mode.
And while although she is pretty mature for her age, she is still only 9 years old. I was really proud of her for noticing “one of the many beauties of life” and for recognizing the simple beauty of a dew-laced spider web. I have always tried to teach them appreciation for things like that in nature, whether it be a gorgeous sunset, a flower or a spider web. Apparently I succeeded.
What beauty in life can you notice today?

My kids would burst into the house after school, often way too quick to tell me about all the “bad” things that happened: who did what, what the teacher said, who called who a “name”, etc. Deciding that had to end, we instituted a rule that they had to greet me (and their father, when he was home) with SOMETHING about their happy day….it could be a kind word or deed, by them or others, something in nature, whatever, but EVERY day, we looked for at least something beautiful.
As they got older, that now well-honed mind-set got them through a lot of difficult times because they’d learned to see SOMETHING beautiful or positive no matter what situation they found themselves in.
The best example of that was when my son, who had JUST turned 17 left Chicago, headed for college in Waco, Texas. In that era before emails, cell-phones and easy communications, a call from Baylor was pretty exciting for me. My son called to tell me “Mom, I’m looking out my dorm window at the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen! I thought you’d like to know about something beautiful in my day.”
I’ll never forget that, and hope it inspires some of the young moms to consider such a “plan” for their kids.
Hope you all enjoy a Blessed Christmas and that your New Year is a wonderful time for you and yours.

Why is the free shipping to continental states only? I live in AK and pay extra shipping on everything ordered. Is it really more expensive to mail to AK and HI?

Yes, Bobi, shipping is more expensive to AK and HI, based on fuel costs. Sorry!

Will there ever be a free shipping day for Canada orders…. Just curious…. I don’t feel important because I live so far away . Sniff sniff

Oh, Linda! We don’t mean to make our Canadian friends feel unimportant! Unfortunately, shipping costs to Canada are quite a bit higher than shipping costs to the US48, and we are unable to absorb them, even if it’s just for one day.

Just a warped thought – but have you ever thought about any diecuts or anything for those of us that are divorced or going through a divorce? I did a therapy-type album as things were happening. When it got too overwhelming or the X did something that really annoyed me, I would scrap it and laugh at it and then put the book away. Divorce is just another painful step in many of our lives, like cancer and the death of loved ones, but it’s hard to figure out how to scrap it and the changes it brings. But the pages I did with the pics I found of his married girlfriend are hidden forever. LOL but it made me feel better and get the anger out. Just a thought! Off to finish filling my cart.
