Scrap Your Trip Year-End C*L*E*A*R*A*N*C*E Sale – Part 2

Entry Filed under: New Items Added

The end of 2009.  What a year!

I don’t want to say I’m glad it’s over, because I am not glad another year of my life has passed, but let’s just say I’m happy 2010 is almost here.

I have been re-reading some of my e-mails from this time last year.  On 1/21/2009, I wrote, “I’m also all about making sure Scrap Your Trip is still going strong on 1/1/2010 and wishing you another Happy New Year.  I am well aware that 2009 is going to be challenging, but we are up for the challenge!”

It’s not 1/1/2010 just yet, but I am happy to say that Scrap Your Trip made it through a very challenging economic year.  We would have never been able to do it without the support of our wonderful and loyal SYT fans, so from the bottom of my heart (and the hearts of my 20 employees), THANK YOU!!!

2009 was a turbulent year for me.  I said goodbye to my 13 year marriage, the house of 6 years that we built, 45 pounds and a large part of my identity.

But I also welcomed into my new life a new identity (one that I am still working on), a condo in a new part of town that I love living in, becoming a better parent as a single parent, the evaporation of most of my workaholic tendencies and new friendships that enrich my life and are very important to me.

I gave up New Year’s Resolutions many years ago, but each year I set an intention for the year.  My intention for 2009 was Be Present.  Live in the moment that I have, instead of wishing for one that has already past, or waiting for the next one to arrive.  I think I did pretty well with that one.

So for 2010?  My intention is:  Be Happy.  I think happiness is a choice. It’s not about what happens to us…it’s about how we choose to define it and what we do about it.

I choose to be happy.  Life is too short to live any other way.  2010?  Bring it on!

I’d like to share something I read recently.  It made me happy.  Maybe it will make you happy too.  Seth Godin, legendary marketer, asked 70 big thinkers to think about a word or phrase about “What Matters Now” and write a 200 word essay.  Some of them will really make you think.

My favorite one is the last one by novelist J.C. Hutchins on “Gumption”.  I think it’s fitting as 2009 comes to a close.  Here’s an excerpt:

“You can start that business. You can lose that weight.
You can quit smoking, and learn to garden, and write
that book, and be a better parent, and be all the things
you want to be … the thing this world needs you to be. It
requires courage and faith, both of which you can
muster. It requires effort — but this effortless life isn’t as
satisfying as it seems, is it?

Declare war on passivity. Hush the inner voice that
insists you’re over the hill, past your prime, unworthy of
attaining those dreams. Disbelief is now the enemy, as is
the notion of settling. Get hungry — hyena hungry. Get
fired up. Find your backbone, and your wings.

Flap ‘em. It’s the only way you’ll be able to fly.”

I have enjoyed reading your comments about yourself and your children since I started shopping with SYT. It seems as though you are a personal friend the way you write about your life. Your products are tremendous. I have used many in my scrapbooking projects–more paper waits to be used. Thanks.

So inspired by your blog I had to leave a comment. I very much appreciate your honesty and openess as by sharing this you allow others to know they are not alone in their own struggles. I also really enjoyed the essay especially the part about being hyena hungry!

Lastly I wanted to share that I too have a Lauren and a Logan! My Logan however came with a twin brother so we also have a Carter!

Do take care. I believe 2010 will bring you what you need as long as you are open to it.

Julie – I love the personal comments you include in your SYT updates. I am going to use your quote about happiness in my next photo album. Love it! Life really is what you make of it… and it sounds like you’re doing a good job making yours worthwhile! Best wishes for the new year!

You are an inspiration Julie, thanks for the words of wisdom you quote periodically. I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year when it comes and whatever the year brings I’m sure you’ll field it beautifully!!

Julie – all I have to say is “ditto” to everything above! I really appreciate the download info as I just received a Sony reader for Christmas. I am reading “Buddha is as Buddha Does” and it mentions “BuddhaVision”, a term I love for its meaning and uniqueness. This is my year to become ‘me’ again – the person I have lost touch with over the years of being whomever everyone else needs. My “new year’s resolutions” I save for April 1 – I figure it’s a day for fools anyway so why not make them with laughter and a grain of salt. Happy healthy 2010!

I am so happy to have found your site! When I read your blog I really felt for you. I ‘said goodbye’ to my first marriage 20 years ago and I know what it is like. Even if it is for the best-which it was-it’s hard and being a single parent is not so easy either.
I just thought I would tell you that things do get better. The lessons I have learned in the last 20 years are priceless and I wouldn’t have learned them any other way. So good luck to you and I am passing on your site to as many people as I can!
    May God bless you

Thanks for sharing the essay on Gumption. Someone hurt me very badly last summer. In additon to the terrible hurt, I was (and still am) very angry. I also avoid confrontation at almost all costs. When I feel as I did, I tend to take it out on myself. Well, I did a real number on me, to the point where I am now almost an invalid. Walking around my house with a walker is difficult and painful. Hamstrings are tight; other leg muscles starting to atrophy. I’m wondering whether I can take care of myself alone in my home.

I am wrestling with the question if I can pull out of this. Can I regain function in my legs? Do I have the “gumption” to do the hard work it will take? I decided to try; your posting reinforced my decision. I’m printing it and posting it on my treadmill.

    Thank you.

Can you see if they have anything for cleaning the house as well as home improvement materials?
