“All dream, but unequally. Those that dream at night in the dusty recesses of their minds, awake the next day to find that their dreams were just vanity. But those who dream during the day with their eyes wide open are dangerous people, they act out their dreams to make them reality.” ~~Thomas Lawrence
A few weeks ago, I got an e-mail from a friend of mine. “Buy this book and read it immediately if you haven’t already. “The Dream Manager” by Matthew Kelly.” My friend is one of the few people I know who reads more than me, so if he was that excited about a book, there was a reason.
It’s a whole story about dreams. In it, he recommends that you write a list of 100 dreams and make a “Dream Book”, which is essentially a scrapbook of your dreams (no wonder I liked it!).
This book really made an impact on me. I realized after I read it that I need new dreams. Many of my dreams for my life were tied to my marriage and now I need new ones. Well, that got me pretty excited!
So, I’ve been thinking about my list of 100 dreams. It’s hard!
When did we stop dreaming? Sure, there are little girl dreams, like being a princess like Sleeping Beauty awakened by our prince. And ponies.
But what about big girl dreams? Somehow in life, between growing up and school and work and starting and raising a family, our dreams kind of fade away. Until we reach the point where we don’t even know what they are anymore. Like now.
I haven’t given myself the gift of time to sit down and make my list of 100 dreams. But I have been thinking about it a lot. Here are a few I can share:
• Become a professional motivational speaker
• Write a book
• Go to Times Square for New Year’s Eve
• See the Trans-Siberian Orchestra at Christmas time
• Horseback ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
• Take a photography class
• Take a Caribbean vacation to a tropical paradise that I’ve never been to so I can lie in the nice warm sun. Preferably with someone to rub suntan lotion on my back. (Hey, a girl can dream, right?!?)
So, how about you? Are your dreams alive and well? Do they need some reviving like mine did? Care to share any? Post them on the blog and maybe they will give me some new ideas.
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined!”~~Thoreau

Julie,
Do you have a personal blog? I think you might really benefit from getting all of your thoughts out there, even in random cyberworld (especially if you want to write a book)!
At 24, I’ve still got lots of dreams, but I’m not a mommy (yet). So thanks for the reminder to always remember my own dreams, regardless of growing up. I know my life will change, but I’m going to do my damdest to not lose myself in the process.

I only have one child and she is in her junior year of college. When she started college I realized I can go back to doing what I love crafting and photography. Not until September 09 did I realize I wasing moving in any direction of any dream. What dreams? Its hard to start dreaming but I have started! My first two dreams are getting published in the crafting world and putting my photographs in competition! My first competition is the end of January! DREAM ON!

Julie-
It is nice to know that you and I share a couple of the same dreams, but here is a list of some of the others.
1. Go to Times Square for New Year’s Eve
2. Horseback ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
3. Attend Bike Week in Sturgis, SD
4. Mardi Gras in Louisiana
5. Go on a Photographic Safari
6. Start my own Business
It is a short list, but I keep adding to it.
The key is try everything! Who knows it could become a dream.

Julie,
You have a realistic list going! I saw TSO for the first time this Christmas and don’t miss it! It’s an amazing show. The will start a non-Christmas tour this spring too. They gave us a preview and it’s going to be amazing too. My suggestion for a vacation spot…4 day Royal Caribbean cruise that includes their private island CocoCay. The cabana boys deliver drinks to you while you’re on a raft just floating along!! My favorite stop when cruising.
Keep dreaming….when you check one off, add another in it’s place. Never stop!!

I’ve read all of the list of dreams here in the comments… several of mine are on there.
The last 5 years of my life I don’t dare to dream because something horrible usually happens and I’m faced with depression and trying just to take one step forward.
I realized yesterday that I’m not living life for myself, I’m living it for everyone else. If I had absolutely noone that would be hurt if my life ended I’d leave this world and not even glance back.
Sorry to throw that depressing thought out, but I can’t tell my family or friends, they worry already.
My son turned 26 today. I gave him up for adoption when he was born, for the first 18 years of his life I’ve dreamed, hoped and prayed that when he turned 18 he would find me. I’m now going into the 8th year… the hope is still there, but the dream sits idle because someone else has to reach out for it to be achievable.

Here comes the cynical New Yorker…Be careful what you wish for…New Years Eve in Times Square is SCARY !!! So many people crushing you and no way out. Bitterly cold and you have to go to the bathroom but cannot get out. Better to dream about being in a warm suite at the Marriott Marquis hotel overlooking Times Square wearing a fabulous slinky gown and sipping champagne. THAT’s FUN !!!!!

Just saw that one of your dreams is to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra at Christmas. That was a dream of mine and I did it this Christmas. What a disappointment. From freinds that have attended in the past it was a great Christmas concert but not this year. The first half was Christmas and VERY loud. They didn’t do their most famous one and the name escapes me right now. The second half was their new stuff and it was just LOUD noise. The orchestra wants to get away from just Christmas and this is where they are going. Friends that like their Christmas albums do not like the new stuff. Since the concert started over an hour late and we had tickets to an evening play, we had to leave before the concert was over but as we left they played the “famous” song that I REALLY wanted to hear. This is just a warning from a fan who was very disappointed.

lol Love this idea. A dream book is sort of like a bucket list. I started one of those. I really need to sat down and finish it.

Although I can’t take credit for this (it was written by Neil Gaiman), I think it’s a wonderful wish for the New Year. This is where I would start a Dream Book.
“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.
…I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.”
Have a wonderful year!

I can’t decide if I’m lucky and have achieved most of my dreams, or if it’s very sad that I have forgotten how. I can’t think of anything I really dream to do – except maybe have the house to myself for a while (2 teenagers will do that to you). I am lucky to LOVE my job as a pediatrician who runs a teen clinic, reading is my favorite activity and never out of reach, I have a few good friends to spend time and dinner with, and I have been lucky enough to travel – Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, and the Egypt and the middle East.
Overall, I’m leaning toward sad that I’ve forgotten hot to dream and plan for new and exciting things.

I have seen Trans-Siberian orchestra several years in a row and have always sat on the floor and loved everytime.
A few of my dreams are:
go shopping in NYC at Christmas time.
get my divorce finally
be debt free

What a lovely idea–100 dreams! Here are a few.
1. Lose weight to a normal size

8. Have enough money to be able to share more with others who have needs

10. Learn to quilt, well. My quilts are filled with love but not much skill!
11. Buy a quilting machine
12. Be able to spend more money on Scrapbook supplies–for all those trips above!
13. Dance naked on a mountain top.
14. See my stepchildren marry.
15. See above–Since I never had kids of my own, I want to be a Grandma!

18. Go to the worlds longest garage sale in Kentudky
19. Go gem hunting in the Smokies

Oh my goodness, it is hard to come up with 100. When did I stop dreaming? When did I stop challenging myself to try something new? You have given me a lot to think about! Thanks!

Oh my goodness, after posting my dreams, I read others and am concerned about #8 Leese. Leese, please talk to so0meone other than an anonymous site. Go talk to a friend, a pastor, or a psychologist or helpline. What you did was amazing. You gave your son a better life. Concentrate on that. And if you at SYT has her email, you might want to contact her and see if she is okay. Just a thought.

Ok so your post prompted me to go and get the book. I’ve now finished reading it. If your post wasn’t powerful enough this book is. I need to sleep on it but I will start my dreaming tomorrow. I had stopped dreaming and have been living from day to day. My fire is now re-lit and I’m ready to take the world on.
Everyone needs to read this book and we need Dream Managers in our schools for the kids.

The only dream I have right now is that my daughter get a job. She moved to St. Pete, FL 6 months ago with her boyfriend and is still job hunting. She’s a graphic designer with a masters degree. Life dreams always revolve around your children because you want so much for them.

On New Years day I fullfilled a life long dream of mine and that was going snow showing in the mtns of Washington state. I never did it as a kid… it was not cool way back then and at almost 60 i never thought i would do it as an adult. However, i did some training throughout the fall to get myself in better shape; stamina wise and did it. An awesome experience to be out in the snow trekking and tripping along on the huge “paddles.” After a while on them, “we” became one and I could enjoy the beauty of the snow and mtns surrounding me. Can’t wait to go again. Now, after reading all this on the blog about dreams, I need to find some more to make into realities.

I have to admit I’d never heard of Matthew Kelly until a friend of mine at church mentioned him. Now he will be speaking at our church the evening of February 10 and I’m so looking forward to hearing his message. If you live in the Cincinnati area and want to hear him speak, he will be at Madison Ave. Christian Church in Covington, KY.
