Congratulations on your positive attitude! I have a similar one, "It can always be worse". You were very fortunate indeed, for all the reasons you said, and more.

I hope you have a great time getting settled into your new home. That is always such a nice feeling!

I like your attitude but you should have called the police. We have been having break-ins of cars in our neighborhoods and the police tell us that it is drug users looking for something they can pawn fast. If the police aren't aware that this is happening, they can't work to stop it! Very important that if you are a victim of a crime, you call the police! They would put extra patrols on that parking lot. What if the next woman they do that to does have children waiting in the car? Or a dog?

Just so everyone knows, I did report the incident to mall security. He stood watch over me while I cleaned the glass out of my car. I chose not to call the actual police because there were no surveillance cameras in the area and I know that the chances of catching the thief was zero. But, I did ensure that security was aware. Unfortunately, he told me it has been happening with more and more frequency. As Denise said above, I just felt bad that someone needed money that badly.

What an extremely wonderful attitude! Thank you for those words-- they were such a great reminder of what I want my attitude to be today.
I may or may not have done the same as you about calling the police, but no matter-- it was your decision to make and your choice. I choose to focus on your willingness to find something to be grateful for in every situation.
Blessings to you!

Julie - your attitude is great. I did freak when I read you hadn't called the police. Came here to post for the same time and saw all the other similar responses. One more reason for calling the police and at least reporting it: the police keep statistics of all the crimes in neighborhoods - that helps determine # of patrols, FUNDING for police from regional, state and federal sources and many other things. The info can also be used to "help" landlords of large malls that they need to add security, lights, more cameras, and any other improvements to help prevent this in the future. It is a disservice to the community to not report this. Besides....some day your camera doohickey might show up (soon) when they bust the bad guys and you could get it back...how's that for optimistic???

I know it's easy to dismiss the idea of calling the police since there was so little taken, but just because the paperwork was still there it doesn't mean your personal information wasn't compromised. it only takes a moment to use the flip to record SS numbers, addresses, or whatever information might have been open to them. I choose to look on the bright side of these type incidents too, but after being burned once, I still err on the side of caution. The police need to know to help protect others, but it also creates a papertrail of your own in case there is an issue to arrise.

Julie, I so agree with your "Attitude of Gratitude"... But, you really should have called the police about the break in of your car. In not doing so, you put others at risk. Being grateful that it wasn't worse is one thing... keeping others safe is another... What if they (ther break in artists) had been doing this for a while and NO ONE reported it... and they get braver and braver... I'm not trying to pull the negative into this, but you really should have called the police.

We have been the victim of so much crime here in Memphis, it is almost routine. Our cars have been ransacked in our DRIVEWAY at least 4 times, and if it's not behind the fence with the 3 dogs, it is fair game.
You really should rethink calling the police. It may have just been kids or someone looking for a little drug money. However, what if some older person should be in the parking lot and the same(or similar) thugs should decide to steal their purse? Or carjack them? The police cannot protect an area if they are not aware there is a problem. You still can call and report the incident. The last time our cars were broken into, the police came right out, and we found out three others(that reported) were also broken into. We are at least more aware of the situation, and watch out for suspicious characters(we have a lot of them), and call the police and let them be aware what is going on. It may be petty at one point, but it is the experience here it may start out petty, and advance to serious rapidly.
For the protection of others, please call and report it.
Optimistic is a very good character trait, but caution is necessary in this day and time. Sadly.
