When was the last time you cried?  Why is it that we are often ashamed of showing our emotions?

I was at a birthday party for one of Logan’s classmates this weekend.  One of the moms was talking about how great it was that the kids were starting to get so independent.  A few examples were shared and I said “You know, I am in a different situation than most of you.  Most of Logan’s classmates are your oldest child, but he’s my youngest.  Lauren just turned 10 and let me just tell you.  You think its awesome now?  Just wait!  You have NO IDEA how much better it’s gonna get!”

I started telling them how proud she is to make lunches in the mornings.  And how responsible she is.  And how helpful she is to me.  And how, finally, after 10 years, my daughter is becoming old enough for us to become friends as well as mother-daughter.  And as I shared this, I started to cry.  Heck!  I’m even starting to cry as I am sitting here typing this!

And then one of the moms looked at me and said, “Look at you!  You’re getting so emotional!  I liked you before, but now I REALLY like you!”

I thought that was such an interesting comment and I have thought about it a lot.  And here is what I think she was trying to say.

I was being real.  Not normal, superficial, birthday party chatter.  But real.  And authentic.  And human.

And don’t we all crave that kind of interaction?  Especially us women?

A friend told me that if we are truly alive, we are only ever one thought away from tears.

I must be really alive then, because just about anything can make me cry these days. :-)   Sometimes tears of sadness, but just as often tears of joy.  Every day I say “Today is going to be a no-cry day!”  But maybe every day SHOULD be a cry day.  Because I like feeling alive instead of trying to stifle my emotions and feeling ashamed of them.

So, give yourself the gift of a good cry.  Don’t just leak.  Cry.  You’ll feel better.  Now, can someone please pass the tissues?

Thanks for the updates! I, too, have days when I’m only a breath away from tears and letting them flow is such a release — but I’m usually alone. Maybe we all need to share that part of our lives too, and feel alive instead of bogged down by the need for tears!! Thanks for the thoughts that really hit home this morning!

My 19 year old son moved out on his own the other day-talk about crying (I am starting to tear up right now). He has been “my boy” all of his life and I am pretty sure I have not had clear eyes since he and his friends packed up the truck and he drove away that evening. I have always worn my heart on my sleeve when it comes to Ryan. I have cried at chorus concerts, art shows, karate tests and of course graduation (that took two whole packages of pocket tissues). I have cried when he has had good news in his life, and cried when he has had bad news or terrible times. I cry when I am looking through his scrapbook pages at all of the memories and I cry when I am sitting alone thinking how strong, handsome and independent he has become. I had never heard “If we are truly alive, we are only ever one thought away from tears” but I am truly testament to that quote. Thanks for sharing, it is good to know that there isn’t something wrong with my “waterworks” and that there are other people who are as emotional as I am. Maybe I should come and work at Scrap Your Trip…sounds like I would fit in well there…lol. Have a great day.

I cried several times at work yesterday – I had just received my son’s biopsy results and he has metastatic thyroid cancer at age 18, fortunately it has a high cure rate. What I found interesting were the various responses: some walked away to give me privacy, some enveloped me in a hug and let me cry, and some tried to share why they thought I didn’t need to cry. For those who face someone crying – I feel the best response is to hold them why they cry.

April- I am so sorry to hear about your son, but happy to hear that he has a good prognosis. He’ll news thyroid replacement drugs when he’s done. Find a good doctor that believes in bio-identical ones. I have thyroid disease and they have made a HUGE difference. We all will be keeping you and your son in our thoughts.

I’m a cryer too! I tear up frequently. I didn’t do too bad when my boys moved out to college, but I’m wondering how I’ll do next year when my youngest heads off to Japan for a semster abroad. I can feel some tears comming on.

I would fit in well with all of you girls. I am a military spouse so I am fortunate to see all the patriots we have in San Diego. Most of all, I am a Mom through and through. My kids roll their eyes at me when I tear up most of the time. My times are sitting in church when something hits a nerve, all my children’s ups and downs. I cry watching Hallmark commercials on tv. I have always worn my heart on my sleeve and am not one bit ashamed. I am dealing with my oldest, now an Army nurse, heading to Germany to take care of those patriots and I burst with pride, but not sure yet how I will deal with the distance. God bless all of you! I love this country and this company. I feel like I know you, Julie through all the writings. Thank you.
