How do you feel about surprises? I like surprises! It’s not the easiest thing for people to surprise me though. I pay attention to little things and I have really good intuition, so I usually know something is up. The kids can never surprise me, because one of them, usually Logan, is so excited that he has to give me a "hint".Tony Robbins has a saying about surprises that I just love. He asks "How many people here like surprises?". Usually a good percentage of the people say yes. "Bull!", he says. "You only like the surprises that you want. Surprises you don’t want you call problems".
I was having this discussion at lunch yesterday with a bunch of business people, including the smartest guy I have ever met (really cute too!). We were talking about how, as entrprenuers, we like surprises, even those that show up as problems. Because we like problems and challenges…they make us say "bring it on!"
I like surprises because it keeps life interesting. I also feel that everything happens just the way it should, so I try to be accepting of whatever life throws my way.
So how about you? Do you like surprises? What’s the best surprise you’ve ever gotten? Please post your comments on the blog. We are going to give a surprise to the person with the best surprise story!
Ok, Let’s talk new products – “Prima’s” in the house. For those of you who have never seen this vendor, you’re in for a real treat. Prima has been known in the industry for creating paper flowers that make “magic” and continue to inspire. One of the amazing reasons why we L-O-V-E Prima’s flowers are because they can be layered within each other to create your own unique flower cluster – once you get started, the ideas are endless (inked, chalked, glittered – if you can think of it, these flowers can handle it). Also, the majority of the flower packaging can be used to embellish your layouts – how cool is that? And if that’s not enough, Prima has even given us an economy line that allows us to “just give them a try” – these flowers are listed at $1.55, have three sizes and a variety of shades, including a cute polka dot print inside each package….I mean really, is there any reason not to at least check them out??? Um, did I mention that we LOVE them?
Two more new lines this week are “Great Getaway” and “Summertime” by Doodlebug. Both of these collections are “SUPERCUTE!” Oh, and one of Tiffany’s tips – ALL of Doodlebug’s collections are designed to coordinate with each other and are made to “mix and match.” We also have Karen Foster’s new spring lines, “Zoo”, “Softball” and “Baseball” – as usual, Karen Foster hit it out of the park (I know, corny joke but I just couldn’t help myself!)
“Boy Jamoree” by Carolee’s Creations is, well, a “boy jamboree.” For all of you lady golfers out there, we have “Moving Day” and “Bent Grass” by Hey, Birdie, Birdie. This vendor is going to be designing female versions of a variety of sports….be on the lookout for new lines to come….as for this one, “FORE” (ok, that was the last of my lame jokes this week)
K&Company came out with these really great kits (Boy, Girl, Traditions and School) that include anywhere from 86 to 201 different pieces, from papers to frames to dimensional stickers – we think this is a “no brainer.” And finally, we have “Oceana” by Creative Imaginations. This collection is an underwater sea adventure – it’s beautiful and whimsical and the colors of this paper make you feel like you are literally “under the sea” watching the most amazing underwater dance.
Our paper collection this week is “Just Cruisin.” We decided to hit on a couple of things that we believe are really memorable parts of a cruise but have never seen in a cruise collection before….like those unbelievable towel animals in the cabins or the muster drill at the beginning of the entire cruise vacation experience and, of course, the place settings (because, after all, what’s a cruise without food?!?) We have two styles of custom paper that is part of the line (SYT-CP-1109, SYT-CP-1109B) and a Custom Captain Life Preserver laser die cut (SYT-Custom-7325) that would look great on your layout.
The SYT Designers have been hard at work – they have brought to you the following designs: Disney, Sports, Soccer, Archery, Scuba Diving, United Kingdom, England, Israel, Iraq, Greece, Bermuda, Hunting, Knitting, Geocaching, and Scrapbooking . We also have new custom items for you to choose from: a Custom Runners 12 x 12 Paper and a Custom Triathlon 12 x 12 Paper.

For a lot of us, tags are a “must have” so this week we are giving away our CI-TagsKit (color and sizes do vary) from Creative Café when you order $65 or more. This promo is good only thru Friday so make sure that you order early! (…and “yes, shipping is still free with this promo with coupon code: FREESHIP59.)

In fall of 2002, I had been laid off for almost a year. I finally started a new job and it was so stressful (sales).
After a month of working there, I was sure I had an ulcer. I couldn’t eat, had a constant feeling like I’d throw up, drank lemon water all day to try and feel better.
I finally went to my husband’s doctor and he started to prescribe some medication. He paused and asked “could you be pregnant?”
I said, “no, I’m on the pill”. He says “let’s just check”.
I’m sure you know where this is going….lol
A few minutes later, I hear two people talking in the hall. The doctor and nurse come in, she takes my hand (I’m freaking out) and he says, “we argued over who gets to tell you and I won. You’re pregnant!”
That’s my best surprise, ever!

Two years ago for my 40th birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to Florida for a week, he took care of everything from the flights, to the tickets for a Phillies game, to our accomodations in Key West to a babysitter for our two kids, it was absolutely amazing!!!

I had only been dating my husband for about 8 months, and my birthday was coming up. We were in a long distance relationnship, he was in Dallas, and I was in Austin. I really struggled with whether to say anything about my birthday cuz I didn’t want to sound like I wanted him to buy something, but then I didn’t want him to feel bad for not telling him and him finding out later.
I talked about this for several weeks with my coworkers and decided not to say anything.
When my birthday came around, the girls at my office wanted to do a happy hour, so we went to one of our favorite places. A short time later, a couple I played soccer with walked in and I was like “hey I didn’t know you liked this place”. A little bit later my parents walked in and right behind them was my dear husband, who had arranged this surprise with all of my coworkers and my parents.
I still think about my surprise party, after five years of marriage and two boys, and how I knew from day one he was the one for me.

My greatest surprise story: My husband and I had our home totally renovated. The project was suppose to take 3 months. We have moved out of our home into his mom’s home while she was spending the fall/winter in Florida. The 3 months came and went. And we still had not gotten back into our house. Our kids were homesick, we were frustrated and I cried everyday I drove by and saw it still empty. It was going to be New Years Eve and I had said, ” I really had wished I could be back in our home for New Year’s.” My girlfriend and I went shopping December 31st for items for the newly renovated house. When I came home, my husband was not there. I asked the kids ” where is Jon?” They said he had to go do some work on the house and I was to meet him there. My husband had spent the day preparing the torn apart house for the most romantic surprise of my life. He had gotten our bed out of storage and set it up in our new GREAT room ( absence of sheet rock, just studded walls and plank board floor at this point), he had set up a workers table with flowers, wine, cheese, crackers and a beautiful card). What was the MOST amazing was, he had taken small paper plates and stapled them to any place there was a shelf and placed candles on them. Behind them, he had stapled aluminum foil so it had the whole glow look going on. It was magical and the most beautiful sight I ever could have seen. So because of my darling husband, I was able to spend New Year’s Eve in our home. BTW, we did not get to move back into our home until April.

I never find out the gender of my baby while pregnant. I love the surprise! With my second pregnancy we had a planned homebirth. Nothing quite compares to the climatic moment when all my hard work paid off and I delivered my sweet baby. Being at home I was the one who lifted the tiny little leg to find that I had a second daughter!!! I was then able to announce that surpise to everyone else!!! It was made even better when my two year old daughter came in right away to be surprised with a new sister!!!

My best surprise ever came in Sep. 2007. My than fiance was deployed and had been gone since May. We had been talking about getting married for such a long time, but didnt have a date or any plans. When he came home for R&R in Sep. he had a whole little wedding planned for us. He had everything set up form the food to the flowers. All I had to do was get a dress. Absolutly the best day of my life!

I dont suprise easy, so April 2008 will stay with me. My then boyfriend TOm, our daughter Cora and I took a week to visit our families, Western NY, PA and Central NY. It was going to be along week.
Its a 6 hour drive to his family and he wanted to stop at the old family farm first. The weather was HOT, a lot hotter then we thought it would be. The AC was not working in my truck, Cora was tired and grumpy and Tom wanted to hike up to the Family falls. My niece and his dad had just passed away previous fall, so we went, Tom needed that connection. I will say the Falls were great, water was nice to be in. We were all hungry, us girls were little testy, I turned to leave and a few steps on, TOm said my name, I turned around with a grumpy “What?!?!”
He was on one knee with a ring!! WIth a hot 18mth old in my arms and tears running down my face, I said yes! We had never talked about marriage, so it was a great suprise on a realy hot day!

My husband and my sons have surprised me with birthday parties on my 40th and again on my 50th. The 40th was a total surprise, family and friends involved and I was totally surprised. When my 50th rolled around this past March, we took the boys, a fiance, and her son to Columbus (Ohio, 3 hours away) for a weekend and had a great time — it was the weekend of my birthday, but no real mention of celebrating. I wasn’t disappointed, as I had received flowers on my day and hubby bought jewelry in Columbus. Imagine my surprise when we walked in to the room for our soon-to-be grandson’s 5th birthday party and it was also for me!! They had pulled it off again — without me having a clue! My friends and family were there as well as little Josh’s friends and family. He was so excited to “share” with me and I was thrilled to tears that my family had done this for me. Families are the best, and surprises are good!

My son was in San Antonio a few weeks ago for a high school band trip. His father (my ex) was extremely inconsiderate about remembering special days like birthdays and valentine’s day. However, Andrew walked into a store and saw a mother’s day sign and immediately called me to tell me happy mother’s day. Before he hung up, he said “I love you”. I could hear other kids in the background so having a 16 year old boy say this to his mom in front of his friends was a great surprise.

My best surprise ever was just this pats mother’s day. My 15 yo daughter somehow, without my knowledge, had spent 3 days videotaping and another 3 putting together and editing a video she planned with her 11yo twin brothers. I have been a single mom for almost 5 years and the sole support of my children. Child support has been sporadic at best and non existent most of the time so there is not much money for extras.
When we got home from church on mother’s day I was told to sit in front of the computer and handed a box of kleenex they knew I would need. My mother’s day video began with a heartfelt message from each of the children telling me how much they loved me and how they loved that I kept them safe and made them feel loved. The remainder of the 5 minute video was set to music (a song picked especially for me) and talked about all the things they think make me a great mom

I have always loved mustangs. For my 40th birthday, my husband surprised me with a one. We were actually celebrating his and our sons birthday but he had set up this whole surprise with our families involved to surprise me with the car. (Hidden in his parents garage) He had saved all year from doing side jobs to buy a 98 mustang with all “my” specifications. He had searched the internet and even drove 2 hours to pick it up. All this even after I had been giving him a hard time about working so much. lol It was the best surprise – I cried – I never imagined he would do something like that and was totally surprised. Our kids even kept it a secret.

My best surprise was when I found out I was pregnant. Doctors had told me I could not get pregnant. My biggest boo hoo hoo surprise was after one of my daughters surgeries she looked up at me and said “mama”. My daughter is non-verbal and had never said it and has never said it again. But I have that 1 time and I will never forget it. She has given me a hundred of scrapbook pages of laughs and smiles. I am blessed

My husband and I fell in love at 2nd sight…1st sight was a blind date and we were not impressed with each other…but upon running into each other again we took a 2nd look and in 6 weeks we were engaged. He was a poor college student working 40 hours a week to pay tuition and rent so an engagement ring was out of the question. We were planning a Christmas wedding…just 5 short months away, and had picked out just a simple band with small diamonds in it so until the wedding…no ring. He was lucky enough to get a side job painting the house of one of his professors to help with finances. The day after he finished painting we went to walk around the mall in a neighboring town. We went into the jewelry store just to look around, or so I thought. We were trying on engagement rings “for someday”. We found one that we really liked, a small round solitare that was just perfect with the band we had picked. He took it from me and handed it to the jeweler and said “We will take this one.” I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t have been more surprised. Buying an engagement ring I am sure is always a special occasion but the way I recieved mine was amazing. This man loved me enough to work above and beyond to buy me a ring we could not have otherwise have been able to afford. 19 years and 4 kids later that ring is on my finger, it is not big or flashy but I would not trade it for all the diamonds in the world!!!

I am a difficult person to surprise as well. I just pick up on little things that are out of the ordinary. But for my 40th birthday, my husband and 3 daughters pulled off the best surprise ever! My girlfriend asked to take me to lunch on my birthday………and since my husband hadn’t said anything, I accepted. Of course the whole time we are eating lunch, I’m complaining that my husband hadn’t done anything for my birthday – not even a card!! After lunch we were going to go shopping, but first she needed to stop by community center for something. It was pouring rain, so I told her I would just wait in the car. She insisted that I come in with her. I’m thinking, “Why should I get out in the rain??” But I did anyway. We walked into the community center, past a couple of rooms, when I noticed a room full of people……it took me a second, but then I realized that I knew all of these people!! They yelled “Surprise!!” and my daughters came running to me with flowers. They took me by the hand over to a table holding a big cake. On the cake was a picture of a cruise ship and beside the cake were tickets for a cruise! He had not only pulled off a surprise birthday party, but also planned a cruise to celebrate my birthday. I had NO CLUE!!!! He had invited family and friends (some that I hadn’t seen in awhile). He also had all the food planned and organized. It was a GREAT DAY!!!

After 18 years of marriage my husband surprised me just a few weeks ago with tickets to see Wicked on Broadway. All of my friends knew where I was going but I had no idea, my husband is so NOT a theater person so I didn’t think of that at all. We flew into Newark, New Jersey and I had no idea where we were going! It was so nice for him to do this for me. We had a great time! If you have an opportunity to see that show take it. It was fabulous. They are coming to Florida in 2011. Your kids would love it, too!!

My best surprise was being asked to marry my second husband. We were renovating his grandmother’s house that was now his. I was sitting on the floor in the dining room painting. He handed me a small box. I opened it up and there was a toy car in the box. The ring was taped to the underside of the toy car. He had taken one of his grandmother’s diamonds and had the ring designed just for me.

My bridal shower was a complete surprise. My Maid of Honor’s mother called one Sunday morning to say that she had some furniture in the attic and wondered if I might want something. I was thrilled. I walked into her house an hour later and all my women relatives yelled “surprise !!”. I turned to my friend’s mother and said, “you mean there’s no furniture?”.

Reading the other surprises one might say it doens’t take much to surprise me. However, if you’re a scrapper I think you can relate to my surprise. I’m always searching for just the right papers, embellishments, flowers – anything for that perfect layout. My recent “hunt” was for a “train” layout. My dad has loved trains since he was a boy and recently got to see the last steam locomotive – the Union Pacific No. 844 – as it was passing through his hometown of Alvin Texas. I wanted to make a really special album for him for Father’s Day. I had made numerous trips to Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Archivers, only to come up short with much for trains. I did a google search for “trains” and as usual too many “hits’ showed up. One in particular stood out because it specifically said “Train Scrapbooking”. I was so excited!! The website was for Scrap your Trip and once I went to the site I was like a kid at Christmas. There were more options than I had seen anywhere. I ordered train metal cast brads, laser borders, die cuts and several different train pages. I was pleasantly surprised. Now “Scrap Your Trip” will be the first place I go when I’m searching for that “perfect” product for my layouts.

It’s not easy to surprise me either but my son managed to do that. He was at college, serveral hours from where we lived. He drove home and made a special cake for our anniversary. To this, he had to stop at the store and pick up all ingredients (knowing we probably did not have what was needed–and he was right !!!) He made the cake, CLEANED UP, and then went back to school. We found the cake on the table when we got home. It was probably the only time I was caught–but it was very memorable.

I knew when Greg was going to propose, I knew when my bridal shower was and baby shower was… I too am pretty intuitive and listen and see a lot that people don’t realize they are doing, etc. so I wasn’t surprised at either of those.. however, the biggest surprise of my life was when I had Madeline ten years ago. I just KNEW that she was going to be a boy. No, we didn’t have an ultrasound tech tell us, I just felt in my heart that she was a boy…. well when Greg said “it’s a girl!” I said “a what? you better check again.” I just kept staring at her all night saying ‘i can’t believe i have a girl…’

Last Oct. I took a couple of rings to my jeweler (small store) to get prongs fixed and while there I always look through the cabinets of things I’d like to have and a set of earrings and necklace caught my eye and that’s all. He wanted to put them on lay away. I just said no and moved on. Well I didn’t get my rings back until Feb.13 and my husband of 40 years knew that I liked the set. He set it up with the jeweler to put them in a box of candy covered with jeans material and a pocket. I broused again forgetting what I saw in Oct. thinking someone must have bought it. My husband walked in and the jeweler went in the back and came out with the box and put it on the counter and said, “Your boyfriend got you this.” I couldn’t believe it. I was totally in shock. Needless to say I didn’t get roses that Valentine’s day. Sweetest guy on the planet.

When my husband and I started to discuss getting married he asked me if I wanted a diamond ring or a house. We had both been married before and neither one of us had a lot of money. He either had enough for a diamond ring or a house. I opted for the house. He promised me that later down the road (maybe our five year anniversary) he would make up for it by giving me the diamond ring he said I deserved. We were married in April and I got the best husband ever and a beautiful home. That December for Christmas as usual he asked me for a list of things I wanted. I gave him my list and thought that he might get a few of the bigger items that I wanted. There was never mention of a ring, I didn’t need it I was happy with what I had. Three weeks before Christmas my daughter and husband were sitting in the living room and my husband asked her if she wanted to see what he had gotten me for Christmas. They ran upstairs and he showed her my gift. That little stinker kept that secret buttoned up so tight and never breathed a word of it to me. She teased me relentlessly by saying I know what your present is…Christmas morning I opened this gift and the biggest, shiniest diamond ring that I had ever seen was sitting in front of me. I instantly started to cry and he got down on one knee and asked me if I would marry him…again!! He is the best and I could not be happier! That was my best surprise!

When I was a little girl my best surprise ever was at Christmas. My Dad was in Korea and had been there for at least a year but of course to a child it seemed like forever. We were all sad that he would miss another holiday. On Christmas morning we all rusted to see what Santa had brought us. We were knee deep in toys and there was a knock at the door, my mom opened it and there was my Dad and he yelled SURPRISE and we all were given the greatest gift and surprise that year.

In April 2007 my husband and i decided to try for a baby, we baby danced for about a year with sadly no results.
We went to the doctors who prodded my hubby, and blew out my pipes, and found that there was nothing they could do as everything looked fine.
I was put on a course of drugs to try and get everything active and after 2 years there was still no results. We were finally refered to an IVF specialist, who layed out the plans and cost of us getting pregnant. The amount was astronomical and we had to really think about our options.
We decided to go for it. The Dr told me to stop taking the drugs and wait until i get my next cycle so they could do some tests. So i waited, and waited, and waited and finally i thought bugger this and took a pregnancy test.
There it was, after 2 years of drugs, operations, prodding and poking, a big fat surpise positive test!!
I gave birth in Dec 2009 to the most beautiful baby girl, who we named Abigail. She is the best surpise i have ever been given!

Surprises are not something that happens to me. But not to long ago, my daughter was pregnant with her second child. I was so excited. I was with her all the time during her pregnancy. I was there during the first ultrasound and found out that I had a grandson. Well time flew by during her pregnancy and all the time, I felt sad, because I missed the birth of my first grandchild. But this was making up for it, watching her go through all the aches and pains and laughter of the 2nd one. The day she went into labor, I was called and of course, I flew to the hospital. I was there holding her hand (along with her hubby) while she went through all the contractions. We laughed and talked and had a great time. When it was time to start pushing, the mid wife came in and cleared the room. (my daughter had a rough delivery of the first one so they were preparing for another rough one). My son in law went back in the room as the rest of us stood in the hall waiting. Just as he started to go inside, he looked at me and said “Mom, Holly and I have decided we want you in there with us”. I was estatic. I was shaking and smiling from ear to ear. I went in and hugged her and told her thank you for letting me be in here with you. I was at her leg helping her push and holding her up during the contractions. I watched as my grandson pushed his way into this world. And all I kept thinking was, “how wonderful it was to see my own daughter give birth to my grandson. It was a moment of surprise and elation that is so hard to describe. Peyton Michael was delivered and in my arms within 10 minutes of his birth. The best surprise was a special gift of a grandson. Two years later…..I got to do it all over again!!!! The best moments in life, are so unexpected!!!!

My son, home from college one summer, had a job delivering furniture. Along the way one evening he acquired a yellow lab puppy that was about to be abandoned by the roadside. He came home at 2 a.m. with this little bundle. “Surprise, Mom…. don’t say a word, just look at her face!” We’ve had 14 years of joy from that surprise. Now, Gracie is moving slowly, has cataracts, faulty kidneys, and can’t hear very well, but everytime I look at that face I know somewhere behind those big brown eyes is the little, dirty ball of fur that surprised me so many years ago.

I was out with my boyfriend, Matt, and for the life of me I can’t remember where we were going, however, I was driving. Matt is telling me how he likes to be with me, we like the same things, think the same way, have the same dislikes and then says since we love one another he thought it would be a good idea to get married. I agreed. He said good. It then dawned on me that I received a proposal of marriage while driving the car. By the way, we are now married 37 years.

My biggest surprise was when I found out I was having a boy…actually the big surprise came when I realized how wonderful it is to have a son. When I was pregnant I was really wishing for a girl. My mom died when I was a little girl so I never got to have that long lasting mother daugther relationship. That is why I wanted a girl. I also thought I would not know what to do with a boy. However, now that I have a 5 month old son I could not be happier with a boy.

Two years ago, my husband was deployed for a year with the US Navy. Our children at the time he left were 5, 5 and 6 months. The twins were miserable. Daddy had missed so many things, their first day of Kindergarten, Halloween, and their baby brother’s first birthday. When we went to see Santa that year, they told him, all they wanted for Christmas was their daddy back from Iraq. Of course Santa said he couldn’t do it and the flood gates opened, even Santa was teary. At 9:00pm on Christmas Eve, our doorbell rang. No one was at our door, but there on the door step was a huge box. The kid were so excited when Daddy jumped out of the box. He was home for a 15 day leave. He told the kids that Santa felt so bad, he picked him up in Iraq and flew him home in his sleigh. It was the best Chrismtas ever. I don’t think my kids will ever stop believing in Santa.

I love good surprises! They don’t happen to me often, but the best one was meeting my late boyfriend. A friend kept telling me he had someone I should meet & kept telling HIM, too, but things were going on with both of us & it just seemed he’d never get around to calling me. I have a Halloween party for my church kids every year & that year he knew I had one scheduled so I didn’t expect to hear from him until the next week. So, of course, he surprises me by calling as soon as the party was over. There I was still in my full witch makeup & costume (hair all ratted & sticking up),sitting amid a house full of Halloween decorations with the kids all having just left and talking with him on the phone. After a few minutes we decided we definitely wanted to meet, so he asked “How about we got out & eat & get to know each other better?” I said “NOW!??!” He said “well, I need to shower & change clothes, but about 1/2 hour?” I said “Give me an hour & I’ll be ready!” Boy, did I scurry around & throw things in my front room where I could close the door & then shower & change!! I was so anxious to meet someone wonderful. I kept looking out the window waiting for him to arrive. I saw his car pull up & went to the door (at this time I lived upstairs, so I had to go downstairs to open the door). By the time I got to the door he’d already decided maybe he had the wrong house! He was standing with his back to me looking across the street and then down at the paper where he’d written my address. I said “Kenny?” and he turned around & smiled & said “Shirley?” He was very good looking and had such a sweet smile & such twinkly eyes. We had 4 wonderful years together, and he provided me with a few more surprises, but none like meeting him & knowing he was THE ONE.
Now, the best surprise I’ve ever given was a baby shower. Several of my friends & co-workers scrapbook and we scrapbook together from time to time. I was still living upstairs for this one, too, and one night a bunch of us were together & one of the girls was pregnant but didn’t know for sure yet. She said after that night, she knew for sure, because by the time she got up my stairs she was tired. Of course, she’d hauled all her scrapbooking supplies, too. So after several months, we decided we’d give her a suprise scrapbooking shower! I contacted her husband & sister (who sometimes scrapped with us) and told them to keep it a secret, but be sure & get her there. Well, her sister had a time getting her to come, and they both had to bring stuff to scrap with (although they’d not need it, but it had to look convincing). Anyway, we set up teddy bears with clues (sorta like the old Burma Shave signs) on my stairs, to intice her to come on up. Boy was she surprised!!! Her husband has tried twice to surprise her with 2 birthday parties, but she’s always found out. She’ll say “the only one that can surprise me is Shirley! She got me good!” During the shower, we played games related to scrapbooking & babies, and we all gave her gifts for a baby scrapbook and each of us did a page. What fun we all had & what a surprise she received!

So my first car wasn’t really my first car. My dad had bought me an 84 Lebaron and in the nice area we lived in, it was embarassing to drive around in something so old. It got to the point where I would walk or find a ride instead of driving it! Christmas that year, I opened my gifts. The last one I opened was a box with a ring in it, I thought that was so lovely but then my dad told me to keep going through the box. Then there was another “fake” ring attached to a set of keys to my brand new eclipse in the garage! He had told me that whole month that he was working on my grandpa’s car and I believed him!! It was mine the whole time and my dad let me know that I had to show him I could be responsible enough with something less valuable before he put money into something that was. I definitely learned a lesson and it was my favorite christmas and I can’t wait to surprise my own kids with something that exciting.

My best suprise was suprising my husband on his 40th Birthday. I invited all his work buddies, all his family all our friends and neighbors. Everybody kept it a secret. I worked out with his co-worker to take him to a baseball game to get him out of the house for the day. For the food, I told my husband that I was helping a friend from church plan a party for a family at church. The friend came to my house and helped me fix all the food that morning of the party. My husband’s family came down from his hometown. We had friends and family parking all over our neighborhood in other people’s driveways so that he wouldn’t notice the cars. It was awesome to see the suprise on his face when he walked into our house and there were about 100 people there yelling suprise. This was the best suprise for me – having a suprise like this work.

My surprise situation was one of those “not sure I want to go through that again but it was cool” kinda deals. My children and I went on a hiking excursion at Elk Creek Park in Northeast, MD last summer. The park has a walking path along the edge of what I believe is the Delaware River and it leads to an opening where there is a light house and beautiful views. I thought this was a really good day to spend time with the kids, get some photos and just enjoy some quality time together. The weather was a bit weird that day. It was really hot out and the clouds across the river were a bit ominous. I just told the kids lets keep walking and if it starts to rain, we’ll just turn around and make a run for the car. We got out to the lighthouse (which by-the-way was at least a mile hike from the car) and we could see some of the clouds starting to roll in a bit. We took some time to enjoy the scenery and take pics but as the clouds came in closer I instructed the kids that it was time to hike back since it was obvious that across the river it was raining and I could see lightning in the distance. As we began our mile hike back…now remember it was extremely hot and humid that day….I suddenly felt this cold shot of air came through. First time in my life that I was ever that scared because I knew immediately that this was one of the signs of a tornado. And sure enough as we are making our way in the only possible direction we could go…overhead in the not too far distance, directly in our path, was a tornado starting to form. The younger children did not see it, but the older ones did. We just looked at each other half smiling but half scared and quickly picked up the pace. I told them if it comes our way, then to get down on the ground and into a ditch…that would be our only hope. Fortunately because I knew God was looking out for us, it disappeared and we were able to get to safety. I heard later that a tornado had hit in the area. The children and I (I have 7) will never forget that day. It’s a photo in my mind that I will always remember. A definite surprise. And of course my husband’s first words to me when I called him to tell him were “did you get any pictures?” lol Looking back I wish I had but being caught off guard as I was, my first thoughts were getting the children to safety.

The best surprise I ever got was when I found out I was having twins! I had just had a miscarriage two months prior and was feeling down about that. Managed to get pregnant again quickly. My husband’s face was priceless when the technician showed him the heartbeat on the ultrasound and then said “And, if you look over here, here’s the other heartbeat. You’re having twins!”

Several years ago, I was headed off to Florida for a conference with a couple of friends of mine. My boyfriend had come over to spend the night because he was planning to drive me to the airport in the morning. We were sitting on the couch, and he told me he had something to show me. He walked over to a bag he’d brought and pulled out a beautiful scrapbook. I was shocked. After years of tolerating my hobby – he had actually gone out and made a scrapbook just for me. It was brown and blue – two of my favorite colors – and it was all about love. I was so excited for the scrapbook, I almost missed the sticker on the bottom of the inside page…. it said “The Proposal.” I flipped the page, and tucked inside a little pocket in the middle of the page was an engagement ring. My boyfriend gracefully slid off the couch, got down on one knee, and proposed. I had absolutely no idea it was coming!!!!! It was the sweet surprise I’ve ever gotten, and we both worked together to finish the scrapbook with photos of our wedding.

I think one of my favorite surprises was my first Christmas with my new hubby. One or two days before Christmas he accidently slipped and told me what he was giving me. I was disappointed because I love surprises so much, so I was resigned to a sort of anticlimatic holiday morning.
Christmas eve my hubby went off to his graveyard shift job. When he got home the next morning he woke me up and asked me to come to the tree. I was floored, there were a million gifts everywhere! I was floored! And then the fun began, I got to start opening them. Each gift was a love or service coupon wrapped with a random object from home – a shoe, a book, a kitchen utensil, etc. He had loaded up his car and wrapped up things during his breaks overnight. It is still my favorite Christmas ever, so much better than any year where I got things!

I have two 15-year surprises…. My 1980 New Year’s resolution was to stop taking “the pill” in hopes of starting our family. Years went by…we tried everything and I mean everything! Finally, 15 years later in 1995, the best surprise – my son was born. In two months, it will be 15 years from that day and my son will hopefully be getting his learner’s permit to drive (time sure flies). He told me I needed to take the day off work so I could take him to get it. Then the real SURPRISE came…He said once he gets his permit, he could drive me to the scrapbook store! (It’s about 70 mins away). I doubt he’ll ever offer to drive me to the scrapbook store again, so I’ve decided to take him up on his offer (wish me luck!)

I like surprises! They are always a challenge.
I would love to see some stickers or embellishments with a 4-wheeler. We do alot of 4-wheeling.

I love surprises. My husband is very good at surprising me all of the time with things like blindfolding me and taking me on mystery dates to getting me a cricut for Christmas. However, my best surprise ever was 16 years ago. I was 5 months pregnant (it was my 3rd pregnancy) and I received a call from the doctor that I had to immediately see a genetics specialist. I had had some blood tests that came back abnormal. When I arrived at the specialist’s office, I was told all of the horrible possibilities that the tests could mean and I was told that I’d need an ultrasound to confirm or rule out certain deformities/abnormalities with the baby. About an hour into the ultrasound, the doctor announced that I was carrying twins, hence the abnomal values on the blood tests. My babies were perfectly normal. Imagine my surprise (and relief) at leaning that I was having twins in my 5th month of pregnancy!

It wasn’t so much my surprise; but this past year,my health turned a little upside down on me. I had returned a week earlier from seeing my new grandson and have just been feeling very emotional. My husband’s 60th birthday was coming up and our children were wondering what to get him. They were also pestering their brother and my dil to come in from out of town and have a little celebration. They knew money was rather tight here with my medical bills and their father needed whole new set of tires for his vehicle, but we didn’t have the money. Mind you, the tires were in dire need of needing replacing. Much to my surprise; the out-of-town son suggested that all of his siblings and he chip in for them. He would have me somehow take his father’s vehicle and get the deed done. My son (btw is out of work) paid for everything over the phone; bought very expensive tires, and made the appointment. So here I am, sitting in the tire store engrossed in a good magazine and terribly emotional (thinking I have such wonderful children) as the tires are being installed and I get tapped on my shoulder and there standing is my son with my dil waiting outside in the car. He had come afterall for his Dad’s birthday. I did a double take as I couldn’t believe my eyes seeing my son standing there. I just couldn’t stop crying happy crocadile tears!

My partner & I decided to get married in Las Vegas – my mum does not like to fly so it was just going to be the two of us.
Little did we know the two weeks after we booked it (a year before) my Sister, husband two childrem ,Dad and my 80 year Nan also booked a trip to Las Vegas. They hid in MGM for three days just in case we bumped into each other! They were in our hotel lobby just before we stepped into our limo to take us to the chaple.
What made it even more special was my Dad walked me down the aisle and my Nan was my witness – Sadly Grandad had died the year before he did know we had booked to go and on the day we flew home we left Nan sitting by the pool in the sunshine – it was the years anniversary since we lost Grandad – Much nicer to see her in the sunshine instead of rainy old England xx
