“What Would You Do?”This is the title of a show on TV on ABC. I caught the tail end of it a couple of weeks ago and it’s been on my mind ever since. The show sets up situations to test human behavior. The two experiments I saw were an actor posing as a pilot getting drunk in an airport bar before he was getting ready to fly and people harassing a grocery store clerk with Down ’s syndrome. In both cases, most bystanders do nothing. They don’t want to get involved.
After watching it, I asked myself the question “what would I do?” I hope that I would do the right thing, but I guess you never know until something happens.
Well, something happened the other day and honestly, my reaction kind of surprised me a little bit.
I was in the bathroom at a park with the kids. Some guy, obviously the dad of a girl in the bathroom, opened the door and started screaming, “What’s taking you so long?!? Would you hurry it up?!? Are you that stupid and slow that it takes you that long?!?”
Well, the word stupid was all it took. NOBODY should call a kid stupid for ANY reason. So, I said loudly, “Would you please stop yelling?” Now, I did this from the safety and anonymity of a bathroom stall, but still…”stupid” brought out the mama bear in me.
So, something to think about today….”what would you do”? The show is on ABC if you want to check it out.

I open my mouth nearly every day to tell people what I think. Once I stopped a man in a parking lot who was being abusive to his wife/girlfriend. I called the police and went to the station to fill out a report.
Nearly every week there are people selling puppies in our local Walmart parking lot. I stop and tell them “Shame, shame on you. We have enough unwanted dogs here. Get a real job instead of making a ‘buck’ off of dogs.”
People need to speak out in certain situations. You did the right thing!!

GO YOU! Actually, I think I’d have said quite a bit more than that!

Yes, I would say something. I have a daughter with Down Syndrome but I think I would have spoken up in both circumstances prior to her birth. I have reported a gentleman slapping his son in an airport. I also once saw a gentleman karate kick his wife as his 3 year old son watched. It was in a parking lot. I pulled in called the police and followed the man & his wife about 3 blocks until the man got out and hid in the bushes. I waited until the police came and hoped he would be charged. Unfortunately the wife did not want to press charges and they were dropped after the man went through anger management. The prosecutor said it was “Cultural”He was a Doctor to boot ! Yes stand up to the underdog I could not live with myself unless I spoke up.

I read once that you should tell someone to fix something if they can at that moment. You should not tell a woman she hs a run in her pantyhose; that only makes her self-conscience. But it is perfectly OK to tell someone their clothes tag is sticking out or they have toilet paper stuck on their shoe.
I think pointing out an abusive situation is asking for trouble; you never know who has a gun !! Paranoid New Yorker that I am…
General rule: BE NICE and SMILE
