Last night I was lying in bed watching “Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery Channel.  It’s a reality show about Alaskan crab fisherman.  I just love that show!  It seems to often be on when I am watching my 10 minutes of TV before I go to bed at night.  I know all the boats and all the captains.  It’s a toss-up for me between Sig of the Northwestern and Jonathan of the Time Bandit for my favorite captain.

Last night, Phil from the Cornelia Marie was showing his son how to read charts for the first time and showed him where his “secret” fishing ground spot was.  It was where he had made a name for himself in the crab industry 12 years ago.  Many of these fisherman are second and third generation.  It’s in their blood.

It really made me think about the Gulf fisherman.  For many of them, fishing has been in their families for generations.  And this may very well be the last generation, based on the disaster that is occurring in the Gulf.  I’ve read many accounts of grown men crying in front of their sons and grandsons as they realize the devastation and try to explain to them that their way of life is over…that what they have wanted to be their whole lives when they grow up isn’t gonna happen.

How do we help these people?  I have been searching for an organization to donate to, but this isn’t like when there is a hurricane and the American Red Cross steps in to help.

Please share any thoughts or ideas with us on the blog.  Thanks!

Now, on to scrapbook supplies!

We have several new collections for you this week.  We have "Graduation" by K and Company – it’s colorful and different than all the other black and white options that we’ve had so far.  We have “Thrift Shop” and “Fly a Kite” by October Afternoon.  These collections remind me of "back in the day" – you know, when your grandparents would tell you about when they were little and how "back in their day, bread was only a nickel" and how "back in their day they would have to walk 5 miles to school in the snow"…awww…fond memories.
I know that I say it often, but I really do love Creative Imaginations! “Birthday Bliss” and “Inspired Traveler” are a perfect example of why.  The colors they use, the designs in the paper and the embellishments in these collections can make someone making their first layout look like they’ve been scrapbooking forever!  We have the sweet and nostalgic look of “Fresh Print Clothesline” by Little Yellow Bicycle, and “The Wild”by Reminisce.
Birdittude – our SYT paper collection this week…our designers had a good time with this one!  It’s playful and fun with a dose of attitude – parents, sound like anyone you know?
The SYT Designers have designed some really great die cuts this week ranging from: Beach, Summer, Memorial Day, Graduation,Theme Park, Italy, Greece, Hawaii, Family, Baby, Kids, Paintball, Baseball, Weight loss, to Scrapbooking.  But if you have been anywhere near Tuscany you have to take a look at our Tuscany die cut (SYT-7375) – it’s simply amazing! (Way to go, Tiff!)  Our new custom items for you to choose from are :  Custom That’s It- I’m Going to Laser Die Cut, Custom Baseball Star 12 x 12 Layout Laser Die Cut and our Custom Grunge Name 12 x 12 Paper.

    I watch deadliest catch also. The episode where Phil gets sick should be soon. He passed away after having a medical issue on board back in Feb. I believe. It’s sad. I liked Phil. His boys are really going to miss their Dad.

    We live in Pensacola, so the oil spill has really affected us deeply. If you’ve ever been here to see the whitest sand in the U. S. and the beautiful gulf water, you can understand how tragic it is for all of us to realize that could be ruined. It’s coming our way. Sam Champion from Good Morning, America was here and on the beach and it just breaks my heart to think of the damage that will happen. This is worse than a natural castastrophy because it could and should have been prevented! I feel sorry for the fisherman and it’s going to really hurt our tourist industry, which we need in Pensacola.

    The only way to donate that I’ve heard about so far is Dawn Saves Wildlife. They’re using Dawn dish detergent to clean oil off of the wildlife, and now Dawn has offered to donate $1 for every bottle purchased toward wildlife conservation efforts of the Marine Mammal Center and the International Bird Rescue Research Center.

    I believe you have to buy a bottle first (then I guess save your receipt or perhaps a bar code), then activate the donation at http://www.dawn-dish.com/en_US/savingwildlife/home.do

    …also, I’ve just found something specifically for the fishermen – the Greater New Orleans Foundation has a Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund for fishermen facing a threat to their livelihood. That website is here:

    My heart breaks everytime I see the horrible news footage of the birds and sealife suffering. Julie, please check into The National Wildlife Federation. They do great work and are looking for donations to help in the cleanup of these poor animals. Thanks for all you do and your site is just wonderful.

    Hi, I live in Louisiana close to the coast, and one organization that is providing for the families of the fishermen is gulfaid. http://www.gulfaid.org

    I don’t live anywhere near the gulf but I know a sweet, little 10 year old girl who is trying to make a difference in a town near where I live. Check out the following links:

    I do know about the Dawn Wildlife campaign and plan to use it for the rest of my life. Not sure about other oraganizations to help but I do know the communities along the Gulf Coast will rally together and get through this. I previously lived in Fort Walton Beach for 15 years and know this is the worst kind of devistation they can be facing. Hurricanes will seem trivial compared to the short and long term damage this oil spill is going to cause to the waters and beaches.

    Make a donation of $10 for National Park cleanup on your cell phone by texting the word PARKS to 90999 by July 1. (Spread the word, please!)

    From the National Parks website:
    By giving to the “National Parks Disaster Recovery Fund” you are helping your parks in the immediate aftermath of a disaster and in sustained recovery efforts. Funds raised between now and July 1st will go to National Park Service efforts in the Gulf Coast region including park enhancements, education and environmental monitoring. No funds will go towards mitigating BP’s responsibilities.

    To support this effort, visit http://www.nationalparks.org or text “PARKS” to 90999 on your mobile device to make a $10 donation. Funds raised between now and July 1, 2010, will go directly to the impacted parks in the Gulf and support critical and immediate needs as well as sustained scientific study of maintenance of impacted ecosystems.
    Parks in the projected path of the Gulf oil spill include:

    * Big Cypress National Preserve
    * Biscayne National Park
    * De Soto National Memorial
    * Dry Tortugas National Park
    * Everglades National Park
    * Gulf Islands National Seashore
    * Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve
    * Padre Island National Seashore

    Money is surely a short term help for the fishermen and their families. Longterm, I think we must pray for God’s help to give someone the wisdom to fix the well, and wisdom to clean up, which may be near impossible.
    In the Oil Protection Act(think that’s the name), the people are supposed to be compensated for their losses. However, who knows if it will ever happen. There will be millions of people who will be effected.

    I am brand spanking new to this site (received my first order yesterday!) and I love the personal touch with each email received.

    Not to take away from direct giving, but what about SYT having a promotion of some kind – for example, on all “beach” and/or “fishing” related items – where a percentage of the sales goes to an organization that benefits the Gulf Coast and its fisher(wo)men? Those who purchase receive a double perk – great scrapbooking materials and that warm fuzzy feeling of giving.

  • 14. Marion&hellip  |  June 9th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    This is a very uplifting site – all helpful information and not the back stabbing. Even though I am not on the coast, I know that when jobs are affected, other jobs seem to pop up to take care of the emptiness. I applaud the fisherman that are helping to clean up the oil. They are probably some of the experts needed to give the solutions of what needs to be done. Hopefully the donation organizations will compensate the people who are working in those areas.

    On a brighter note and keeping with the theme… My nephew lives in Michigan’s U.P. and fishes in Alaska. While there, he met Jonathon from the Time Bandit in a local tavern – nice guy! Wish it was me! :)

    OK, I had to find out about Phil so I googled him…

    “On January 29, 2010, Phil and crew were off-loading the Cornelia Marie at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The boat’s engineer, Steve Ward found Phil on the floor of the stateroom, having suffered a stroke.”

    Phil was flown to Anchorage, where he underwent a 12-hour procedure to repair the damage to his brain. He was placed in a medical coma, but even that couldn’t keep him completely quiet. He recovered long enough to share his wit and love with family and friends before passing on February 9.

    This organization is down there right now saving oiled animals…I have taken their oil spill course and they do fabulous work. Check them out.

    I love watching Deadliest Catch…but I’m dreading the one where Phil is no longer with us. He appears to have had his last stroke about the same time my mother did, and they ended up dying at about the same time as well.
