According to the Photo Marketing Association, all of us shutterbugs took 23 billion digital pictures last year (but probably only 15 billion are good ones - the rest are blurry, have red-eye, and have at least one person with their eyes closed or looking away from the camera.  We keep meaning to go through and delete the bad ones, but who has the time?)  Of those 23 billion memories, about 13 billion of them are still sitting on our hard drives or our memory cards.

It wasn’t that long ago that our memories were a lot safer.  We printed our pictures and filed the negative strips away in shoeboxes.  In that scenario, you had two "backups".  But now, negatives have all but disappeared and over 60% of our memories never see photo paper.

What’s the answer?  We need to print our pictures.  Not just at home, either.  A lot of times, they are not printed at a high enough resolution and they can never be scanned to get a second generation print.  We need to think of photo lab prints just like we used to think of negatives.

My pictures are backed up, but I have done a lousy job of printing them.  I’m the perfect example of someone who takes digital pictures until my memory card is full, downloads them to my hard drive with the best of intentions to delete the bad ones and print the good ones.  But before you know it months have gone by.  I’m not willing to have ANY of my memories be only a 1 or a 0 on a piece of metal or plastic.

So, I’m on a mission to print all my pictures.  A couple of years ago we ran a comparison test of all the major photo labs and I think it’s time to do it again.  Are there any you want us to test?  I’ll send the same 10 pictures to all the labs and give you the scoop on who did the best job.

We have 261 new items this week.  Creative Imaginations released a ton of new collections for November!  We have collections for Paris, New York City, Washington DC, wine tasting, music and cooking.  The have the official Lego® collection and two looks for the Christmas holidays - one is a retro look with flocked paper and the others, Hollyberry & Mistletoe, coordinate so you can mix and match.  Tiffany used them for a Shop by Layout look (see below for pictures).  We also have the Mr. Campy collection from Cosmo Cricket (Mr. Campy is an adorable little marshmallow guy), a Thanksgiving collection from Karen Foster and new Glitter Dots from James Buttons.

From the SYT designers, we have 2 new custom papers (one is skywriting and one is graffiti for your dog) and 2 custom die cuts (a customized license plate and a customized camping sign).    We are proud to show off our first paper collection, called "Globe Trotting" (see layout below).  We have die cuts for all 50 states and the beginnings of our holiday die cuts (wait until you see the lamp post and the front door).  I certainly hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we enjoy making them for you!  Click here to see them all:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/111908.html

Lastly, I goofed last week.  We put together our first video on the "semi-scrapbooked" products and I thought the link was in the e-mail.  It wasn’t.  So, I put it on our website this time.  I really think you’ll like these products.  Here’s the link to the video:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/thanksvideo.html

I’m so proud to be her Mom. :-)

Wow, do we have a lot of new products this week!  The Wassail Christmas collection from Basic Grey is here.  We also ordered the collection packs from last year’s collections, Figgy Pudding and Fruitcake, along with the matching fibers.  We have three new collections from K&Co - Fall Harvest, Ancestry (including a storage folder, record book kit and organizing system for all of your genealogy needs) and Life’s Journey.  We have two new collections from Reminisce - Real Magic (think Disney) and Enchanted Autumn (yeah - owls!).  We have three collections from Spanish Memories to help with your Latin scrapbooking needs - Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cumpleaños.  Scrapbooking Trends has a new idea book "Celebrate the Holidays" filled with inspiration for your holiday season.

The Scrap Your Trip designers have been busy too!  We have 3 new custom papers this week - one with diagonal text, one airplane that we can customize for you and your photo turned into 12×12 paper!  We’ve gotten lots of requests from you to offer this service and we’re happy to be able to oblige. :-) Of course we have lots of gorgeous papers from destinations near and far.  We also created several papers to scrapbook the recent historic election.  We have die cuts for Disney, Veteran’s Day, baby, baseball, Thanksgiving (including a customized decorative plate) and scrapbooking (with a customized nametag that says "Hi My Name is … and I’m a Scrapaholic!".)  Click here to see all the items:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/111208.html.

We also have two new layouts in the Shop by Layout section - one with the Real Magic collection and one with the Enchanted Autumn collection.  Click here to see:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/shopbylayout.html

Lastly, we have some great "semi-scrapbooked" products - something new for us.  I thought it would best be explained in a video.  Hope you like them as much as I do.

Scrap Your Trip 5th Annual Turkey Sale http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/11/05/scrap-your-trip-5th-annual-turkey-sale/ http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/11/05/scrap-your-trip-5th-annual-turkey-sale/#comments Wed, 05 Nov 2008 14:07:54 +0000 Julie Swatek New Items Added http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/11/05/scrap-your-trip-5th-annual-turkey-sale/ Apparently, I am a "helicopter parent" - one of those moms who "hovers" over their children.  I know I am very overprotective.  I’m convinced that a pedophile or serial killer is lurking around every corner, ready to steal my children if I let them out of my sight for even a second.  The 24-hour media culture we live in doesn’t help matters any.  Intellectually, I know being so protective of my kids isn’t helping them learn how to live in the world, but sometimes I can’t help myself.  I’m afraid to let them take risks, because they might get hurt.

I recently read a great book that a friend recommended called A Nation of Wimps: The High Cost of Invasive Parenting.  What an eye opener!  Here’s a quote from the jacket:  "Parents are going to ludicrous lengths to take the lumps and bumps out of life for their children, but the net effect of parental hyper-concern and scrutiny is to make kids more fragile.  When the real world isn’t the discomfort-free zone kids are accustomed to, they break down in a myriad of ways.  Why is it that those who want only the best for their kids wind up bringing out the worst in them?"

Lauren went to a birthday party on Sunday held at Fun Spot.  They have go-karts, bumper cars, etc.  She’s only been on go-karts a couple of times and the last time someone bumped her kart and she bit her lip and there was blood everywhere.  When we got there, all her friends were on the go-karts.  Driving the go-karts.  By themselves.  She said she didn’t want to go by herself and she wanted me to buy a wristband so I could drive her.  I took a really deep breath and told her she was tall enough to go by herself.  "I don’t want to go by myself!  I don’t know how to drive!"  We stood there for a minute watching all her friends racing by and laughing.  I recognized the look on her face.  "Lauren, you can do this.  The gas pedal is on the right and the brake is on the left.  All you have to do is push the pedals and steer the steering wheel.  You can do this!"

She sat down with such a mixture of trepidation and excitement.  She got all buckled in and off she went.  She was driving!  I was laughing and crying at the same time.  As she went around the track (very slowly), all the things that could go wrong kept popping into my head.  Was she going to crash?  Should I have made her wear the helmet?  She’s completely out of my sight now - what if something happens and I’m not there to help.  Am I going to have to run out on the track to pull her from a fiery wreck?!?  And then she came around the corner, both hands gripping the wheel, very intent on driving. As soon as she saw me, she broke out in an ear-to-ear grin.  They went around the track for a few more minutes.  When she got out, she came running over to me and said "That was TOTALLY COOL!!!!!"  Yes, it was.  I let go just a little bit and nothing bad happened.  :-)   On our way to the car after the party was over, she turned to me and asked "Can I drive?"  Oh please, honey!  Mommy needs to take this in baby steps!

Today is the beginning of our 5th Annual "Turkey Sale".  What’s a turkey sale?  Well, I wish every product we picked was a winner, but some of them are turkeys.  And there is no room for turkeys in the Scrap Your Trip warehouse!  So, there are over 1,300 "turkeys" marked down to 40% off.  But…1,100 of them we have 25 or less on hand.  On the first day of last year’s turkey sale, we sold out of more than 75% of the items.  Don’t put them in your wish list or your registry - chances are they will be gone by the time you get back.  We will be removing things from the site as quickly as we can, so if something was in your shopping cart and then it’s not, it’s because we sold the last one.  If two orders come in for something and we only have one  - the item will stay on the first order in and we will issue a credit to the second person.  I’m looking forward to getting these "turkeys" out of the warehouse.  Our holiday products are starting to arrive (Basic Grey Wassail came in yesterday) and they need a shelf to call home.  Click here to get started:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/clearance.html.

I am thrilled to have something so permanent so that I can always remember the year Lauren was a "dangel" - half devil/half angel and the year Logan was so obsessed with Indiana Jones.  I put the ornaments we made next to the original photo so you can see how close they are (that’s Jill and her dog Mickey in the bottom picture).

We have more designs in the works, but I wanted to show you these first since Halloween is such prime picture taking time.  You can e-mail your photos, but if you have older photos that are not digital, you can mail them to us and we will scan them for you at no charge.   It’s really easy to send us your pictures - all the instructions are on the individual ornament pages.  We’ve been so excited to bring you this new way of preserving your special memories - I hope they bring you many years of joy!  Click here to see:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/110308.html

This week, we have over 200 new items from manufacturers such as Creative Imaginations, Best Creations, Moxxie, Piggy Tales, EK Success, Scrappin’ Sports & More, Sandylion and of course, Scrap Your Trip.  We’ve been getting lots of e-mails about the My Pages Talk voice recorder and we have it here this week.  This is the last of the Halloween supplies we will be adding, but of course we’ll keep them year-round, so that the supplies are available whenever you need them.  We have pirates and cars and trains and birthday and softball and fall and music and biking and Disney and autumn and election and pregnancy and travel…and…lots more!  As Scrap Your Trip exclusive products this week, we have several customized options:  a football border, a Disney lanyard, custom Vegas paper and custom school matching left and right papers.  Tiffany has also designed another layout, this time for travel, called "Off We Go".  All the products are available on the Shop by Layout section.  Don’t feel like cutting and pasting it all together?  Let us do it for you!  We will send the layout completely finished, ready for your travel memories.  Click here to see the new layout (pictured below) http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/shopbylayout.html and here to see all the new items, click here:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/102908.html.

But I never thought that my kids would feel that stress too.  We pulled them out of school to go to Vermont and they missed five days.  We got their schoolwork from their teachers and got it all done while we were gone.  But, my 8-year old daughter, Lauren, came home from school on Monday and was really upset.  She felt like she missed a lot while they were gone and didn’t know how she was ever going to get caught up.  They had finished their unit on reptiles while she was gone and started a new one on birds and she didn’t know any of the terms they were using.  She also has 2 quizzes she has to make up.  She started crying because she said it was really frustrating to feel so behind and she didn’t know how she was ever going to get caught up.  I felt so bad for her!  I didn’t realize that stress started so young :-(   I told her about how I was feeling the same thing at work and how it always feels this way when you get back from vacation and you have lots of catching up to do.  It was one of the first "grown-up" conversations we’ve had where I felt that we really related.  She was so relieved to hear that I go through the same thing sometimes and I think it was one of the first times she has seen me as a person, not just as her Mom.  I felt so good because I was able to make her feel better.  It makes me feel like I’m going to be able to handle this mom thing as she gets older. :-)

We have over 250 new items this week - it’s a scrapbooking smorgasbord!  New product and themes include: Fright Night, Old Guys Fish and We’re Adopting! by Creative Imaginations, Girls Sports by Scrappin’ Sports, & More, Racing from L’il Davis, outdoor sports by SRM Press, Bella Girl by Teresa Collins and Dotted Swiss from Bazzill (including the swatch book).  We also have a lot of themes in the SYT exclusive products:  fall, cruise, Iceland, Mexico, zoo (wait until you see the giraffe and elephant die cuts) and military.  We took a bunch of pictures in Vermont that we turned into SYT papers - perfect for scrapbooking fall and apple picking!  We have two custom die cuts - one for a family road trip and one for adoption (could also be used for births).  Based on the fantastic response we got last week on our custom papers, we’ve designed another look.  You can either choose the paper color or the ink color.  Click here to see all the items:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/102208.html.

Lastly, we have a new section for you to take a look at - Shop by Layout.  Our designer, Tiffany, is a very talented scrapbooker and she designed a fantastic double-page spread using the Fright Night line from Creative Imaginations.  We have it on the website, listed with all the products she used to make it.  We’ve even included the pop-dots and Stickles!  Here’s a link to check out the layout:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/shopbylayout.html

A little over a year ago, we started making custom die cuts so that we could help you personalize your scrapbook pages.  Today, I am thrilled to announce that we have a new way to help you personalize them even further - custom scrapbook paper!  It’s edge-to-edge 12 x 12 printed on Bazzill cardstock.  We’ve started with four designs, and welcome any suggestions for additional designs.

In the face of the economic roller coaster we’ve all been on lately, Scrap Your Trip is happy to do our part to stimulate the economy with the "Scrapbookers Economic Bailout Plan"!  Just enter coupon code BAILOUT at checkout for 20% off your order.  It expires at 11:59 pm Eastern Time, tomorrow, Thursday, October 16th.  (It is not valid on prior purchases, nor able to be combined with any other offer.)  Use it to make some frightfully good scrapbook pages with our 64 new Halloween items from Scrap Your Trip, Moxxie, EK Success and Cloud 9 Designs.  We also have some pink ribbon diecuts from the SYT Design Team and four pink ribbon papers from our newest designer, Rene.  He has a very artsy style that I think you’ll like.  Click here to see all the items:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/whatsnew.html

Every year when we think about this trip, we wonder if we should spend the money and this year is certainly no exception.  With the doom-and-gloom blaring at us from every TV and newspaper, we wondered if we should cancel.  But I used the 10-10-10 rule in making my decision and as usual, it helped make the right choice.  What is the 10-10-10 rule?  It’s based on an article by Suzy Welch I read a few years ago.  Basically, when you have a decision to make, ask yourself what are the consequences in 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years.  So, what are the 10 minute consequences?  We’d save money but all be disappointed.  What are the 10 month consequences?  Next year, we’d all be talking about how we didn’t go.  What are the 10 year consequences?  Lauren and Logan are at the age when they will remember this.  Ten years from now, this time in history will be able to be summed up in 3 seconds, but my kids would always remember the year we cancelled our trip.  Fall in New England is good for our souls and it’s always a time of tremendous bonding and memory making in our family.  As I sit here at my desk at home writing this, there are pictures on my desk and wall from the last two years worth of trips.  I’m not willing to give up these times with my kids (while they still want to go on vacation with their parents), so we’re going.  We’re going to come back a few days earlier than we had originally planned, but the 10 year consequence of having my children remember their fall vacations in Vermont as some of the best times of their childhoods, I’m not willing to give up. :-)

We have over 200 new items this week, including the new Granola and Urban Prairie collections from Basic Grey.  We also just got the rest of the embellishments from the Ambrosia, Eva and Offbeat collections.  We only ordered a limited quantity, so when they’re gone, they’re gone!  We have some great Halloween stuff this week.  We have the Whimsy collection from K&Co, and as usual, it’s some of my favorite.  They made some awesome paper crafting kits:  a Haunted Tree, favor bags, a Trick or Treat garland kit, a skeleton kit and pumpkin lantern kits.  It’s a great way to do something quick and crafty - they did most of the work.  We got lots of supplies to help you scrapbook all your trick-or-treaters in costume (Spiderman, Batman, Disney Princesses, Buzz and Woody, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Superman/Supergirl, and more).  We have the Thankful breast cancer collection from Melissa Frances (who is battling it herself), the new Sweet collection from Die Cuts with a View, military, road trip, UK, Germany, autumn (you’re going to love Tiffany’s scarecrow die cut!) and sports, including a customized football helmet and pennant.  Click here to see all the new items:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/whatsnew.html.

Scrap Your Trip “Out With The Old” 25% Off http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/10/01/scrap-your-trip-out-with-the-old-25-off/ http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/10/01/scrap-your-trip-out-with-the-old-25-off/#comments Wed, 01 Oct 2008 12:18:23 +0000 Julie Swatek New Items Added http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/10/01/scrap-your-trip-out-with-the-old-25-off/ We’re about to have a big change in the Swatek household.  My kids have always gone to after-school care.  Even before they started school, they were in daycare until closing time.  There was always a group of moms and dads that came screeching in the parking lot at 6:30…late again!  We’d nervously joke with each other "I get the Mother of the Year award today!"  "Not fair - you had it yesterday!"  It’s the only life they’ve ever known, but they haven’t done a lot of the things other kids their age do.   Lauren recently went to a friend’s for a play date and they were amazed that she had never been on a scooter.  Getting to go outside and play after school is the exception for them, rather than the rule.  So…we’re in the process of hiring a baby-sitter to pick them up from school and bring them home.  She’s going to help them with their homework, so when we get home from work, we’ll be able to spend some enjoyable time with them instead of the "dreaded homework fight".  It’s going to be a big change for them, because they are used to having lots of playmates in after-school care and now they’ll just have each other.    I hope we’re doing the right thing. :-)

It’s clearance time!  We’ve marked down over 800 items on 25% clearance.  As usual, I’m sad to see products go.  I know it sounds silly, but we get kind of attached to them.  First we saw it at a show or catalog, we decided to order it, we keyed the info into our system, scanned the image, added it to the website and got to see it every time we processed an order.  But, no room for new stuff if we have too much old, so out it goes!  There is actually a "mini" tradeshow this weekend in Orlando and lots of our vendors are releasing their fall collections.  I just love to go see brand new scrapbooking product!  I managed a sneak peek at Creative Imaginations and they have two new licenses, Ripley’s Believe It or Not (World’s Most Talented Athlete, etc. and Sea World’s Discovery Cove).  It’s great that the show is so close, but I don’t get to go to a city where there is a Portillo’s.  Yum…chocolate cake :-)

Scrap Your Trip Adds 221 Items + Cloud 9 Limited Quantity http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/09/24/scrap-your-trip-adds-221-items-cloud-9-limited-quantity/ http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/09/24/scrap-your-trip-adds-221-items-cloud-9-limited-quantity/#comments Wed, 24 Sep 2008 13:58:12 +0000 Julie Swatek New Items Added http://site.scrapyourtrip.com/blog2/2008/09/24/scrap-your-trip-adds-221-items-cloud-9-limited-quantity/ Do you know what "Ichthyology" is?  I didn’t either, until my 3rd grade daughter, Lauren, had to study it for school this week.  It’s a branch of zoology devoted to the study of fish.  She can now identify all the parts of a fish, including parts I’ve never heard of before.  It is amazing to me the things she is learning in school.  Here’s just a few of her spelling words for the week:  celebration, fascination, legislation, manufacture, possession, declaration…these are only 6 out of the 24!  I don’t remember what spelling words I had in 3rd grade, but I’m pretty sure it was words like book, play, cat and dog.  :-)   I realize I’m showing I’m getting a little older by the whole "Well, when I was your age…" comparison, but the differences between what it was like when I was a kid and now are just mind-blowing.  Every generation goes through this, I know, and I’m sure to each generation it seems like things have changed faster.  My kids don’t know what a film camera is, they’ve never waited all week for the Wizard of Oz to come on TV and it’s never occurred to them that there was a time that you couldn’t "Google" an answer you trying to find.  It’s kind of exciting and scary at the same time to think about how different life will be 10, 20, 30 years from now!

We have over 200 new items this week, including tons of travel!  We also have the Finley’s Estate Collection from Cloud 9 available in limited quantities.  Just like Dandlion Wishes last week, once an item is gone, it’s gone for good.  Fall is in the air (even here in Orlando - it’s dropped all the way down to 80 degrees!), so we’ve got a Harvest collection from Best Creations.  We have the Sports Reflections line from Scrappin’ Sports & More, along with lots and lots from Paper House.  They are one of my faves, so we went through the catalog and picked out stuff we hadn’t ordered (including the above mentioned Wizard of Oz).  We added more Just the Edge colors from Bazzill and the SYT designers have had a lot of fun this week between our die cuts and our papers.  We have crew and white water papers for those of you who requested them.  We even made a customized Disney name tag for you Disney enthusiasts out there!  Click here to see them all:  http://www.scrapyourtrip.com/whatsnew.html.
